Your accountant shouldn't hear from you like a desperate ex every June 🤣

One of the biggest mistakes we see is business owners only reaching out when tax time is around the corner.

The best results come from regular conversations throughout the year, not a last-minute panic in June.

Better planning = fewer surprises, less stress, and more confidence in your numbers.

If you’re ready to have clarity, confidence, and a cleaner set of books in 2026, we’re here. Send us a DM or book a call 💻💬

Most business owners come to us after a year of flying blind. 😅

Guessing what to put aside for tax. Scrambling at BAS time. Wondering if their Xero is even set up right.

That's exactly what we're here to fix.

Working with Two Sides means you get a proactive accountant in your corner all year - not just someone who shows up at 30 June and tells you what you owe.

We keep your Xero clean, tell you what to set aside, flag issues early, and explain everything in plain language. So you can actually run your business without the financial anxiety in the background.

New financial year starts 1 July. If you've been thinking about making a change, now is literally the best time to do it.

July is a big month for your business finances. Here's what to have on your radar 👇

📅 1 July - New financial year kicks off. Payday Super also starts today, meaning super must hit your employees' fund within 7 business days of every payday (not quarterly anymore).

📅 14 July - STP finalisation due. This is your Single Touch Payroll wrap-up for the 2025/26 year, so your team can access their income statements and lodge their tax returns.

📅 21 July - Monthly Activity Statements due.

📅 28 July - Q4 Income Tax instalments due. This is also the deadline for your Q4 super contributions if you haven't already paid them.

New financial year = fresh start. If you've been meaning to get your Xero sorted or want to hand off the juggle, now's a great time.

As we get closer to 30 June, this is usually the point where business owners start thinking…

“Everything’s probably fine… right?” But when we actually open up the file? 👀

There are often a few red flags sitting there quietly… waiting to cause problems at tax time.

Swipe 👉🏼 for the big ones we see all the time.

These aren’t just “accounting clean up” issues…

They impact your:
📊 Profit
💸 Tax position
📈 Decision making
✨ Clean data = confident decisions

If you’re reading this thinking “hmm… I’m not actually sure if my Xero is right”… you’re not alone.

That’s exactly why we created our Xero Self Health Check guide, to help you spot these issues early and fix them before EOFY stress kicks in.

😅 Things people rush to buy before EOFY… that don’t actually help.

Every June, we see it happen 👇

The “quick, spend money so I pay less tax” mindset kicks in.

Suddenly it’s:
💻 A new laptop (even though the old one works fine)
🛠️ Random equipment that wasn’t on the plan
🛍️ Personal items trying to sneak through as “business”
📦 Stockpiling inventory you don’t actually need

And look… we get it. No one loves paying tax.
But here’s the part most people forget 👇

💸 A tax deduction still costs you money.

You’re not getting that spend back in full > you’re just reducing the tax on it.

So if you didn’t need it in the first place… you’ve actually put your business in a worse cash position, not a better one 😬

The smarter approach?
✨ Spend with intention
✨ Invest in things that actually move your business forward
✨ Don’t let EOFY pressure drive your decisions

Because good tax planning isn’t about panic spending… it’s about strategy. 💙

If you’re unsure what’s actually worth doing before 30 June, send us a DM, we’ll help you make the right call 💻💬

Every year we see the same thing…Business owners scrambling in the last week of June trying to get everything sorted before the deadline.

The reality? EOFY doesn’t need to be stressful if you get on the front foot now.

A few simple checks can make a huge difference to:
✔️ Your tax position
✔️ Your cashflow
✔️ How smooth tax time feels

This is your reminder to start ticking things off early, not later.

Save this post, work through it step by step, and your future self will thank you 💙

And if you want help reviewing everything properly before 30 June, send us a DM. We’re here to help 💻💬

June key dates to keep on your radar 📅

As we head into the final month of the financial year, there are a couple of important deadlines to be aware of 👇

✅ 22 June
Lodge and pay your May activity statement

✅ 30 June
Last day of the financial year

This is the time of year to make sure everything is up to date, your bookkeeping is tidy, and you’ve reviewed anything that may impact your tax position before the year closes.

A little preparation now can make tax time a whole lot smoother 😅

If you’re not sure what you should be doing before 30 June, or you want help getting everything sorted, send us a DM or book a call. We’re always happy to help 💻💬

😅 “It’s a business expense… right?”

We hear this all the time. And look, we get it, when you’re running a business, it’s easy to assume certain things should be deductible. But the ATO doesn’t quite see it that way.

There are a handful of expenses that business owners try to claim every year… that just don’t pass the test. And getting it wrong can mean adjustments, penalties, or awkward conversations later on 😬

If you want a general rule...

If it’s not directly related to earning your income, or it has a strong personal element, it’s probably not deductible.

💬 If you’re unsure about anything, it’s always better to check first.

Send us a DM and we’ll point you in the right direction 💙

Last week we sent out our Federal Budget tax summary to our mailing list, breaking down the key changes and what they actually mean for business owners and individuals.

We know budget announcements can feel like a lot of noise, so we’ve pulled out the bits that matter most when it comes to tax, cash flow and planning ahead.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll also be running a webinar to walk through everything in more detail, answer questions, and chat about the practical side of what these changes could mean for you.

If you’d like to join us and aren’t on our mailing list you can sign up here - http://bit.ly/4tDdeU0

👀 6 things that make the ATO pay attention… and not in a good way.

No one wants extra attention from the ATO 😅 But the reality is, certain patterns and behaviours can put your business on their radar pretty quickly.

Here are some of the big ones we see 👇

🚩 Late BAS lodgments - Consistently lodging late can signal poor compliance habits.
🚩 Missing or late super payments - This is a big one, and penalties can add up fast.
🚩 Director loan accounts not managed properly - Mixing personal and business money without structure can trigger issues.
🚩 Heavy cash payments - Especially when income doesn’t seem to match business activity.
🚩 Inconsistent reporting > f your numbers don’t stack up across BAS, payroll, and tax returns… it raises questions.
🚩 Payroll errors > incorrect wages, super, or STP reporting can lead to compliance risks.

The good news is most of these are completely avoidable with the right systems and support in place.

Staying on top of your numbers, keeping things clean and consistent, and getting advice early makes a huge difference.

If you’re not 100% confident everything is set up correctly, send us a DM. Better to check now than deal with it later 💻💬
