What is Diversification?

Diversification is a core principle of investment and wealth creation, in essence it means : " Don't keep all your eggs in one basket." If for some reason you drop that basket..... all your eggs are going to break and you may be left with no eggs.

When it comes to creating wealth, it's important to invest in different things and not focus your investment on one asset or asset class, that way when the value of certain assets decrease, you own other assets that behave differently and are affected by different factors.

An example: A client owns their own home with a mortgage, they start a self managed super fund and borrow to buy an investment property through super because they would rather have a bricks and mortar investment and don't like stocks and bonds.

The strategy works well initially, but then interest rates rise and the property market drops by 10% that year. So now the client feels these effects in a serious way, because they have invested in property and debt only.

Meanwhile another client who also owns a home with a mortgage invests their other assets into Australian and International Shares and Fixed interest. As the interest rates rise, their fixed interest investments perform well, because high interest rates are actually good for those with cash to invest. Their property value drops slightly that year, and the cost of servicing their debt increases, but they receive a boost from their other assets which balances out their overall situation.

This is a very simple way of looking at it, we can diversify in many ways, both in terms of the actual asset classes and the individual investments themselves. A strong investment portfolio should hold Australian Shares, International Shares, fixed interest such as term deposits and Bonds, small cap companies, large cap companies, technology, mining, financials.... the list goes on and on.

We know that when some of these assets perform well that others won't, this is called investment Beta. When bond yields increase growth shares tend to take a hit, because investors can now earn a better return with less risk. By holding a small part of all these asset classes, the idea is that you reduce risk and volatility and grow in a sustainable, thought out way.

Diversification is just one part of the investment philosophy we use at Roots Financial and over the long term it helps our clients create investment growth to achieve their goals. For most people that goal is financial freedom and being able to do whatever they want in retirement, but everyone is different.

Ask yourself, what am I aiming for? Be specific, because vague goals and vague plans don't get you where you want to be. Everyone out there is working hard, but not everyone is working towards something they actually want.

Let's get smart in the 23/24 financial year and focus on what we want to achieve, and what we are going to do to make it happen.

Today at Roots Financial we celebrate 1 year in business! It has been an incredible first year and I just want to say a massive thank you to all my new and existing clients for all your support. We have come a long way over the past year, and so have all of our clients. I read through all the google reviews of our business this morning and I feel overwhelming proud of how many great outcomes my clients have achieved this year.

YES, these are challenging economic times, but what I've seen over the past year shows me that advice and support are even more important now than they ever were.

To know that we have played a part in increased wealth, financial freedom and education to all of our clients is an amazing feeling.

Despite all the noise and volatility over the past year, I know with 100% certainty that the future is bright for all my clients.

It's time to stop showing up every day like it's an accident. We are all capable of changing the course of our lives with a few days, weeks, months and years of planning and executing. The most important thing in this life is to figure out what you want..... not what everybody else wants but what YOU actually want.

Then you just need to wake up everyday when the alarm goes off, get up and do everything in your power to make it happen.

So yes, you are going to need to work HARD, but even more important than that is figuring out how to work SMART.

That's where we come in. That is where a real adviser provides their value.

So if you don't have a plan then come in and let me help you formulate one. If you do have a plan that's even better, I can help you get there in the most efficient and effective way possible.

What is Life Insurance?

Life insurance is a group of policies that you pay for to protect you and your family/ business partners from the negative outcomes of your death, disability (temporary or permanent) and critical illness such as cancer or heart conditions.

Income protection is a policy which replaces a portion of your income until you are able to return to work at your normal capacity.

Having been in the Financial Services industry for more than 10 years, I've seen a lot. I've managed claims for clients which have changed their lives for the better, and I've seen people with no insurance be financially devastated by accidents, illness and medical conditions.

For some of us, we rely on the cover provided by our superannuation funds, which in some cases is a sensible and affordable solution, but I would strongly urge those people to check in to exactly how much they are covered for and to understand the policy terms, which are often of a lower standard than those held outside of super.

If you have a family, if you have debt, or if you have your own business, life insurance is a necessity. It's that simple. Yes, it costs money but so does car insurance, and most of us wouldn't drive without it.

An interesting statistic from a recent survey: 83% of people in Australia have car insurance, but only 31% of people have income protection.

Your ability to drive is important, don't get me wrong.... but your ability to work is essential.

There are different ways to pay for and structure insurance in order to make it affordable and sustainable whilst still covering yourself and your family.

Some will say that insurance is a waste of money or that insurance companies never pay, in my experience that is simply not true. I have personally managed many successful claims over the past 10 years. These claims paid out peoples debts, paid for treatment when required and supported the families of people who died unexpectedly.

If you set your insurances up through an experienced adviser, the statistical likelihood of a successful claim is much higher, the same way that if you go to a good mechanic, your car is likely to work better than if you tried to fix the car yourself. Insurance is contract law. It's about understanding the contract and making sure it covers the client.

Insurance isn't simple, but it is important. As parents we spend our whole lives trying to provide for and protect our children, but not everything is in our control.

It may be that you have insurance in place but you want to make sure you are not over paying OR under-insured, or it may be that you've put off figuring this out until now. Either way, we have a great deal of experience setting up insurances and managing successful claims for clients.

Client Testimonial:

" I met with George in 2018 to review my insurances after he pointed out I had no cover in place. I took out Life, Disability and Trauma Insurance. Less than a year later I was diagnosed with serious tonsil cancer and immediately went into what turned out to be life saving treatment which cost $80,000. George helped me successfully claim on my Trauma insurance, which covered all my costs and meant I was able to get through six months of not working in my business. I then tried to return to work but after multiple return visits to hospital I just couldn't make it work. George then guided me through and managed a successful Total and Permanent Disability claim.

This allowed me to pay out my debts, hire people to take over my role in the business and get through this terrible time in one piece. The advice provided and the care taken by this adviser was literally the difference between all my years of hard work building my business going out the window or not.

I strongly recommend this business and this adviser to take care of your personal and business insurance needs."

Is the bull market back? Lower than expected inflation projections from the Fed Reserve sent markets into a buying frenzy last week, with massive gains, especially in the tech sector, with the NASDAQ index ending the session up more than 7.5%. Then on Friday China indicated a change in their zero tolerance Covid policy, causing the Hang Seng to go up by nearly 8% in a single session. This is not the end of the volatility, but these are encouraging signs that the world is changing gear and gaining some positive momentum/ investor sentiment. Let’s hope we keep charging straight through till Christmas 🦬🐂🐏

“If you love life, don’t waste time, for time is what life is made up of.”

- Bruce Lee

Spring is here.

A time for new beginnings and transformation. Ask yourself this : where do you want to be in ten years from today?

Do you know what you want?

It’s true that we can’t control everything in our lives and that’s a good thing, but are you doing the right things when you are in control?

When you look around the world and see buildings, cars, aeroplanes and cities you are looking at the result of people throughout history who made ambitious plans and executed them. Whether you are building a car, a team, a garden, a menu, an empire or a treehouse you need a plan and you need to follow through if you want to succeed.

So if in five or ten or twenty years you see yourself as enjoying your life and creating financial freedom, then you need a plan and it’s that simple.

Like Winston Churchill said:

“He who fails to plan, is planning to fail”

Me and Millie both came away with Bronze at the Australian National Championships today. Of course we wanted gold and we both fought very hard. I’m proud of what we achieved today and the work that went into it but the real win was watching every single one of our team at Pure Jiu Jitsu Southern Highlands. I am seriously humbled and inspired by the heart, grit, skill and determination I witnessed today. For once, I’m lost for words. So proud of this team, so proud to be a part of this team.
