Don’t pull your financial goals out of thin air!

Use your actual business numbers to build goals you can realistically work towards.

Start by reviewing:

- Your current revenue and profit
- Monthly cash flow
- Biggest expenses
- Most profitable products or services
- What worked and what didn’t
- Expected costs and changes for the year ahead

Then use those numbers to set realistic revenue, profit, cash flow and spending goals for the rest of the financial year.

But you need accurate, up-to-date books to plan with accurate numbers and that’s where we can help.

There’s no perfect month to get started.

The best time depends on when you’re ready, your expected income, cash flow and how prepared you are to manage your bookkeeping and tax obligations.

Starting at the beginning of a financial year can feel cleaner but you don’t have to wait until 1 July if you’re ready now.

Before you launch, make sure your business structure, registrations, bookkeeping and tax obligations are sorted.

Catch-up and clean-up bookkeeping may sound similar but they solve different problems.

You need catch-up bookkeeping if your books are behind and transactions haven’t been recorded for several months or longer.

Catch-up bookkeeping can include:
- Entering missing transactions
- Catching up bank and credit card accounts
- Bringing your books completely up to date

You need clean-up bookkeeping if your transactions have been recorded but your books contain errors or inaccurate balances.

Clean-up bookkeeping can include:
- Fixing miscategorised transactions
- Reconciling accounts
- Correcting balances and bookkeeping errors

And sometimes, your books need both a catch-up and a clean-up.

Not sure what your books need?

You should start paying attention to your cash flow now, NOT when you’re struggling to cover expenses.

Here are the money conversations you should be having with yourself, your CFO or your bookkeeper:

- How much cash is actually coming in each month?

- What large expenses are coming up?

- How much is sitting in unpaid invoices?

- Can we comfortably cover payroll, taxes and other bills?

- Which expenses are increasing?

- Do we have enough cash set aside for slower months?

- What does our cash flow look like for the next 30, 60 and 90 days?

Good cash flow management starts with knowing what’s coming before it happens.
