Rental income must be included in your annual taxable income, but so should the expenses that come with owning the property.

Many rental property expenses can be claimed as tax deductions, including interest, depreciation, insurance, council rates, repairs, maintenance, and property management fees.

Generally, capital expenses are the main costs that can’t be immediately claimed as a deduction.

One of the biggest advantages of an SMSF is the level of control it gives you over your super and investment decisions.

As long as your investments meet the sole purpose test and align with your strategy, you have far more flexibility in how your super is invested.

There can also be tax advantages, with most contributions taxed at 15% and tax free withdrawals generally available from age 60.
