Work related and Working from home Deductions: Evidence Still Matters

Work-related deductions are a permanent feature of Australian tax returns, but they are also a permanent ATO focus area. The reason is simple: small overclaims across millions of taxpayers add up quickly. The basic rule has not changed. To claim a deduction, you must have spent the money yourself, the expense must be directly related to earning your income, and you must have a record to prove it....

Work-related and home office deductions remain ATO focus areas. Learn what records you need before lodging.

BAS, GST and Cashflow: Staying Ahead of ATO Payment Pressure

For many small businesses, the BAS is treated as a quarterly compliance task. In reality, it is also a cash flow management tool. A Business Activity Statement brings together GST, PAYG withholding, instalments and other obligations. If the business is not managing these amounts during the quarter, the BAS can become a financial shock. That is especially true where GST collected from customers has been used to fund operating expenses, wages, stock or owner drawings....

BAS should not be a quarterly surprise. Learn how GST, PAYG and cash flow planning reduce ATO payment pressure.

Director Penalty Notices Explained: Company Debts Can Become Personal

Many company directors assume that company tax debts belong only to the company. In many cases, that assumption is dangerous. Director Penalty Notices, commonly referred to as DPNs, allow the ATO to recover certain company debts from directors personally. The rules can apply to unpaid PAYG withholding, GST and superannuation guarantee obligations. For directors of small companies, this is one of the most important tax risk areas to understand....

ATO Watching Car Expense Claims: Do Not Default to 5,000 km

Car expense claims remain one of the most common areas of ATO scrutiny. They are also one of the easiest areas for taxpayers to get wrong. The cents-per-kilometre method can make car claims look deceptively simple. Taxpayers see that there is a maximum claim available up to 5,000 business kilometres and assume they can simply claim the maximum amount each year....

The ATO is scrutinising car expense claims. Learn why taxpayers should not automatically claim the 5,000 km maximum.

Property Manager Reports Are Not Enough: The Records the ATO Expects Landlords to Keep

The annual statement is only the starting point A property manager’s annual statement is useful. It summarises rent received, management fees and expenses paid on behalf of the owner. But it is not always enough to support every deduction in a tax return. The ATO expects rental property owners to keep records that show what the expense was, when it was incurred, how it relates to producing rental income, and whether it is immediately deductible or capital in nature....
