While you are pondering who to vote for…Over the last 20 years, Australian government gross debt has increased significantly, both in absolute terms and relative to GDP. Prior to the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, the debt was under $52 billion. By March 2020, it had climbed to $580 billion and is currently $897 billion as of May 2023. The 2023-24 Budget forecasts further increases, reaching $1.067 trillion (36.5% of GDP) by the end of the 2026-27 financial year.

The blue graph Net debt below is the one to watch, reaching its lowest during Howards term (he focused on paying down the debt). Whoever you vote for let’s hope they have plans for reducing debt/managing our economy better!
