Are you confident you have engaged your workers correctly? Some employers choose to engage a worker as a contractor when in fact they still meet the definition of employee, especially for superannuation guarantee purposes.

Fair Work is shining a spotlight on sham contracting, where a person is engaged as a contractor when the employer doesn't reasonably believe this.

If you are unsure if you have engaged your workers correctly, and are paying the right entitlements, reach out to us for assistance.

And don't be scared to employ people directly - we see time and again that employers are fearful of employing directly when often it's actually easier and more streamlined and ensures that you are meeting all your obligations correctly to pay your workers.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) are ramping up their focus on sham contracting, with community insights and intelligence revealing concerning patterns of behaviour across several industries.

Yesterday afternoon saw Amazon Web Services affected by a major worldwide outage.

This means that Xero, one of the platforms which uses this service, has also been impacted and we are still seeing either reduced or no performance by the software this morning.

We will keep monitoring the return of services and advise when it's fully back up and running... however reading some of the information on the internet this could still be a number of hours - and hopefully not the worst case "days" that I've seen!

✨ Small business owners with less than 15 employees – two important changes start today (26 August 2025):

🔹 Right to Disconnect – Your employees now have the right to say no to work-related calls, emails or messages outside their usual hours (unless refusing would be unreasonable). It’s a great time to have a chat with your team and set clear expectations.

🔹 Employee Choice Pathway – Casual staff who’ve been with you for 12 months can now request to move to permanent employment if they no longer meet the casual definition. You can only refuse on fair and reasonable grounds.

📝 These changes come under the Fair Work Act, so it’s worth reviewing your practices.

We’re a boutique accounting and bookkeeping practice looking for a permanent part- or full-time bookkeeper for a minimum of 20-25 hours per week to join our team as an employee (no BAS agents please).

The ideal person for this role will be well organised and capable of handling multiple clients with concurrent deadlines with minimal supervision (we don't micro-manage!). We're looking for a detail-oriented person who loves numbers, working with multiple clients and gets a kick out of making everything balanced!

This is a fully work from home role currently (with a view to move into in an office in the future in inner North Brisbane), with all computer equipment provided. We will only be considering candidates who are local to the area as we are fully committed to building a on-shore team.
