Last week, the Government handed down the 2021 Federal Budget. We’ve analysed the Budget proposals and provide the following insights and analysis.

Some of the key takeaways from this budget include:

• Removal of the work test for people over 67 wishing to contribute money to super. From 1 July 2022, individuals up to the age of 74 years will be allowed to make or receive non-concessional or salary sacrifice super contributions without meeting the work test.
• Downsizer contribution for people selling their homes. The Government will reduce the minimum age requirement for the downsizer contribution from 65 to 60.
• First Home Super Saver Scheme. From 1 July 2022 the Government will increase the amount of super savings available to first home buyers from $30,000 to $50,000.
• SMSF residency requirements. The Government will amend the SMSF residency requirements to make it easier for funds to maintain their complying status when members move overseas.
• Complying income stream conversions. Individuals will be given two years to exit a specified range of complying retirement income stream products, such as term allocated pensions.
• Aged care reforms. In response to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, the Government is investing $17.7 billion over five years to improve the aged care system.

Whilst we believe these changes are a huge win for Australians, as with all Budget announcements, these have yet to be legislated and are proposals only at this time.

Our office has been impacted with the restrictions, as many of you will have been, and the whole team is currently working from home with some limitations. We may take a little longer to respond or assist you, but we are confident we have the measures in place to continue for the lockdown period.

During a crisis, when we think about our investments, it's easy to forget we've been through all this before. We sometimes think "this time is different". But look at what the world has endured in the recent past. World wars, a deep depression, a global pandemic and a financial crisis, just to name a few. When it comes to our investments, there are only two prices we should care about. The price we bought at and the price we sell at. If we haven't locked in the sale then do we need to worry about our investments falling?

The team at AHS Financial have been busy over the past few months getting the business ready to change Licensees from Securitor to Affinia. As you may be aware, all financial advisers in Australia must be licensed and we have recently changed our Licensee. The good news is we have now successfully transitioned our License to Affinia Financial Advisers Limited and we are now learning the new systems, software program, procedures and processes!
