Give me the transactions that don’t make sense, the numbers that aren’t quite adding up, and the MYOB file that’s had a few too many cooks in the kitchen… and I’m in my element.

Rob and the team at Carter Management Australia came to me because their MYOB needed some tidying up. But rather than simply fixing things and handing it back, we also worked through some training so they could better understand what was happening and feel more confident moving forward.

Because fixing the books is one thing. Helping someone understand why they went wonky in the first place is where the real value is. 🙌

💰 "Is my bookkeeper charging too much?"

It's a question I heard recently, and I actually think it's a really fair one.

Instead of wondering or assuming, start with a conversation. 💛

Ask your bookkeeper what their fee includes. You might be surprised by everything that's happening behind the scenes that you never see.

If cash flow is tight, be honest about that too. There may be parts of the work you're comfortable taking back on yourself, which could reduce your monthly fee. Every business is different, and sometimes a small change to the scope can make a big difference.

Think of it like taking your car to a mechanic 🚗 If you don't know what the invoice is for, you'd ask them to explain it. The same applies to bookkeeping. A good bookkeeper should be happy to walk you through the work they're doing and why it matters.

Clear communication builds trust. It also helps you understand the value you're receiving and whether the service is the right fit for your business.

No judgement. No awkward conversations. Just honest ones.

If you've ever looked at your bookkeeping invoice and wondered what goes into it, don't be afraid to ask. The best client relationships are built on transparency and understanding. ✨

Okay… I’m getting better at this whole standing-up-in-front-of-people-and-talking thing! 😂

I’m not usually one to love being the centre of attention, but last week I spoke at our advisory board about something I am very passionate about — why I built BKH Bookkeeping and where I want to take it.

For me, it’s always been about more than bookkeeping.

I built BKH to create a business that gives me the balance to do work I love and be there for my kiddies.

And now I’m excited to grow that vision even further.

Yes, I want to help businesses with their bookkeeping.

But I also want to help the business owners who want to do their own books.

Because sometimes you don’t need someone to do it for you — you just need someone to explain it in a way that finally makes sense.

That’s what I love about what I do.

Taking something that feels scary and confusing and turning it into:

✨ “Ohhh… I get it now.”

And honestly?

I love what I do so much that it doesn’t really feel like “work”.

🧾 Chasing missing supplier invoices every month?

If you regularly deal with supplier statements from places like Bunnings, Mitre 10 or other trade suppliers, there’s a tool that can save you a lot of time. 🙌

One of my favourites is Dext. I'm not affiliated with them in any way. It's simply a tool I use because it makes life easier.

One feature I love is the supplier statement matching. Upload your supplier statement and Dext compares it against what's already in your accounting software. If something is missing, it quickly highlights the gaps so you know exactly what needs following up.

Even better, it can help request those missing invoices from your supplier, which means less time chasing paperwork and more time focusing on your business. 📲

Think of it like doing a puzzle with someone who instantly tells you which pieces are missing 🧩 It takes away the guesswork and makes month end much smoother.

If you're a tradie or a business with lots of supplier invoices each month, this feature alone can be a huge time saver.

Technology won't replace good bookkeeping, but the right tools can certainly make it faster and more accurate. 💛

I love seeing a business owner walk away from a training session feeling more confident about what’s happening behind the scenes. 💙

🤔 "Don't bookkeepers just categorise transactions?"

It's a question I was asked recently, and honestly, I can understand why people think that's all we do.

Yes, categorising your income and expenses is part of bookkeeping. But that's only one piece of the puzzle.

Behind the scenes, we're checking that your bank accounts actually balance, reviewing reports, investigating anything that looks unusual, making sure customer and supplier balances are accurate, and looking for issues before they become expensive problems.

Think of it like an iceberg 🧊

The transaction coding is the part you can see above the water. Underneath is all the work that keeps your business records accurate, your reports reliable, and your business ready for BAS, tax time and informed decision making.

It's not just about keeping your books tidy. It's about making sure the numbers tell the right story.

So next time you wonder what your bookkeeper is working on, remember there's a whole lot happening in the background to give you confidence that your accounts are correct. 💛

That's the part I love most. Finding the little things before they become big things.
