The latest Federal Budget includes more than $3.5 billion in measures designed to support small business resilience, improve cash flow, and encourage innovation.

Key highlights include:

โœ… Permanent Instant Asset Write-Off
From 1 July 2026, businesses with aggregated turnover under $10 million will be able to permanently deduct eligible assets costing less than $20,000.

โœ… Expanded Loss Carry-Back Rules
Companies with turnover up to $1 billion may be able to carry back current-year losses to recover tax paid in the previous two income years.

โœ… Start-Up Tax Support
Eligible start-ups within their first two years of operation could access refundable tax losses from 1 July 2028, helping improve early-stage cash flow.

โœ… Enhanced R&D Incentives
Changes from 1 July 2028 include increased refundable R&D tax offsets for eligible experimental activities and expanded access for qualifying businesses with turnover under $50 million.

These proposed measures aim to reduce compliance costs while giving businesses greater confidence to invest, innovate, and grow.

If youโ€™d like to discuss how these changes may impact your business, our team is here to help.

Donating to a good cause can make a real difference. In some cases, you may also be able to claim a tax deduction.

But not all donations are tax deductible. To claim a deduction, your donation must be made to an organisation registered as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR).

With the rise of crowdfunding campaigns and online fundraisers, itโ€™s important to remember that many of these are not run by DGRs, meaning donations made through them often canโ€™t be claimed on your tax return.

Before donating, itโ€™s always a good idea to check an organisationโ€™s DGR status using the Australian Business Registerโ€™s DGR search tool.

This week we celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

Itโ€™s a time to listen, learn, and reflect while honouring the strength, resilience, and contributions of First Nations communities across Australia.

We encourage everyone to take the opportunity this week to engage with local events, support Indigenous businesses and artists, and continue meaningful conversations about culture, connection, and community.

The Federal Budget has introduced several measures aimed at reducing tax compliance and providing additional support for everyday Australians.

Hereโ€™s a quick overview:

โœ”๏ธ Working Australians Tax Offset (WATO)
From 1 July 2027, eligible workers โ€” including sole traders โ€” will receive a permanent annual tax offset of $250, helping to reduce the amount of tax payable each year.

โœ”๏ธ $1,000 Instant Work-Related Deduction
Starting from the 2026โ€“27 income year, employees will be able to claim up to $1,000 in work-related expenses without the need to keep receipts, making tax time simpler and reducing record-keeping requirements.

โœ”๏ธ Medicare Levy Relief
Low-income Medicare levy thresholds will increase by 2.9% from 1 July 2025, ensuring more Australians on lower incomes receive relief from the levy.

While these measures may seem modest individually, they are designed to put more money back into taxpayers' pockets and make tax compliance easier for millions of Australians.

Superannuation is one of the most effective long-term wealth-building tools available to Australians, but itโ€™s also one of the most misunderstood, particularly when it comes to tax and contribution strategies.

As we approach EOFY 2026, now is the ideal time to review your super position and make the most of the opportunities available before deadlines hit.

Here are some key strategies to know:

The concessional (before-tax) contribution cap for 2025/26 is $30,000, including employer SG contributions and salary sacrifice arrangements.

If your total super balance is under $500,000, you may be able to access unused concessional caps from the previous five years.

Important: unused amounts from the 2020/21 financial year expire permanently on 30 June 2026.

Salary sacrificing into super can be a tax-effective way to grow retirement savings, with contributions generally taxed at 15% instead of your marginal tax rate.

Higher income earners with income above $250,000 may be subject to an additional 15% tax on concessional contributions.

Contributing to a lower-income spouseโ€™s super fund could provide a tax offset of up to $540.

Eligible low-to-middle income earners who make after-tax contributions may receive up to $500 from the government.

Contributing to a childโ€™s super early can help maximise the long-term benefits of compound growth.

Superannuation rules change regularly, and the right strategy will depend on your income, balance, and long-term goals. Reviewing your super before EOFY can make a significant difference both now and in retirement.

The ATO is currently using data matching to identify disc...

The ATO is currently using data matching to identify discrepancies in contractor income. Specifically, businesses in certain industries are required to lodge a Taxable Payments Annual Report (TPAR), detailing exactly what they paid their contractors.

If you provide services in these sectors, the ATO likely already knows your total earnings:
Building & Construction
Courier & Road Freight
Cleaning
IT Services
Security, Investigation, or Surveillance

Ensure all payments received are included in your tax return. Discrepancies may trigger an ATO contact request, or worse: a full audit with potential penalties and interest.

Check your records against your clients' reporting to stay compliant!
