📣 STP Finalisation: What Employers Need to Know

Single Touch Payroll (STP) finalisation is the end‑of‑year process where employers report the final wages, superannuation, and PAYG withholding for each employee to the ATO. Once lodged, these figures are locked in and used to pre‑fill your employees’ tax returns through myGov, showing their income statements as “tax ready.”

This applies to all employees you’ve paid and reported through STP — including casuals, terminated employees, and directors.

If you handle payroll, now’s the time to ensure your year‑end data is accurate and ready for finalisation. A smooth STP finalisation means your employees can lodge their tax returns without delay.

🌟 PAYDAY SUPER: WHAT EMPLOYERS NEED TO KNOW

💼 What Is Payday Super?

From 1 July 2026, employers must pay super every payday, not quarterly.
This change helps employees grow their super faster and reduces unpaid super.

📍What’s Changing?

1. Super must be paid sooner
📌Super must reach your employees’ super funds within 7 business days after each payday.

2. Super is calculated differently
📌Super will be based on qualifying earnings, which include:
✅ordinary time earnings
✅commissions
✅salary sacrifice
✅other wage amounts currently counted for SG purposes

3. STP reporting changes
📌You’ll need to report both qualifying earnings and super liability through STP.

4. New rules for late payments
📌If super isn’t received on time, the Super Guarantee Charge (SGC) applies.
Under the new rules, the SGC:
✅applies after 7 business days
✅is assessed by the ATO
✅includes daily compounding interest
✅includes an administrative uplift
✅is tax deductible
✅new employees have 20 days for their first super contribution to be made

5. Penalties are changing
📌Penalties will be 25% or 50% depending on your compliance history.

✔️ What Stays the Same

✅You still pay super for the same employees and eligible contractors.
✅The SG rate remains 12%.
✅Your current payment systems remain valid (except SBSCH).

🚫 Small Business Super Clearing House (SBSCH)
Closed to new users since 1 Oct 2025.

Existing users can access it until 30 June 2026.

Not available from 1 July 2026.

⚙️ Improvements to Make Payday Super Easier
✅Near real‑time payments
✅Better error messaging
✅Member verification before paying
✅Super funds must also allocate contributions within 3 business days (down from 20).

🧭 What Employers Should Do Now
📌Review payroll processes for more frequent payments.
📌Confirm your payroll software will support Payday Super.
📌Stay updated as the ATO releases more details.
📌Reach out if you need help preparing.
NB* Xero uses 'Auto Super' and Quickbooks uses Employment Hero's 'Hero Clear'
