👋 Tip 01

Separate business from personal on day one.
One account for the business. One for you. Never mix the two.

Nearly every mess we untangle starts in the same place: one bank account trying to do two jobs. 💳

When your business and personal spending share an account, every report after it becomes a guess. No one can tell, three months later, which coffee was a client meeting and which was a Saturday. And when the numbers are a guess, so is every decision you make off them. 🙅‍♀️

The fix is almost embarrassingly cheap. Open a second account, run the business through it, and pay yourself a regular amount across to your personal one. That's it.
Do that, and you get to sit with your numbers the way you'd sit with a good book and a coffee: ☕ calm, clear, and able to see what's actually going on.

If that sounds like the opposite of your setup right now, our free finance review will tell you honestly where things stand.

You focus on the business. We handle the finances.

Invoices and receipts are often confused, but they each have a different purpose.

An invoice is issued before payment to request payment from your customer. A receipt is issued after payment has been received as confirmation of the transaction.

Keeping both documents helps you stay organised, track what you’re owed and maintain accurate business records throughout the year.

It may seem like a small detail, but good record keeping makes bookkeeping easier and provides reliable information when you need it.

Good record keeping starts with the small details. If you’d like support, feel free to get in touch.

Getting your documents together before meeting with your accountant can save time and reduce unnecessary back-and-forth.

The ATO already has access to a lot of your information — employment income, bank interest, government payments and private health insurance details are typically reported directly throughout the year.

What we need from you is the information they don’t have.

That includes receipts for any work-related expenses you’d like to claim, a logbook if you’re claiming car expenses, working from home records, and details of any rental income or expenses. If you’re a sole trader, we’ll need your income and expense records along with any supporting documents. Bank statements help us verify figures and fill any gaps. And if you started a side hustle during the year, or sold shares or an investment property, we’ll need to know about that too.

Every person’s situation is different, so what’s needed will vary — but the more complete your information, the smoother the process.

Not sure what applies to your situation? We’ll guide you through it at your appointment.

Thinking about lodging your tax return as soon as the new financial year begins?

It’s understandable, but waiting a little longer can often save time later.

Not all of the information needed to prepare your tax return is available on 1 July. Your employer may still be finalising your income statement, while banks, private health insurers and investment providers also need time to report information to the ATO.

Lodging before that information is available increases the chance that something may be missed, which could mean amending your return later.

An accurate tax return is always more important than being first to lodge.

Your bank balance is important, but it only tells part of the story.

It shows how much money is sitting in your account today. It doesn’t tell you what customers still owe you, which supplier bills are due, how much GST you’ve collected but haven’t yet paid, or whether your business is actually making a profit.

That’s why good bookkeeping is about much more than recording transactions. It gives you accurate information to understand how your business is performing and make informed decisions throughout the year.

If you’d like bookkeeping support, we’d love to hear from you.

Why is your tax refund different this year?

It’s one of the most common questions we hear during tax season.

Many people compare this year’s refund with last year’s, but your tax outcome is based on your individual circumstances for that financial year. Even small changes can affect the final result.

Changes to your income, the amount of tax withheld by your employer, investment income, a HELP debt, or your Medicare and private health insurance obligations can all influence your tax outcome.

A smaller refund doesn’t automatically mean you’ve paid more tax, and a larger refund doesn’t always mean you’ve had a better outcome.

The most important thing is making sure your tax return is complete and accurate.
