An article written by Brian Brozovic out of the USA11.2 million cattle can hide a shortage.
USDA released its latest Cattle on Feed report Friday (link in comments). At first glance, one number might make you wonder what all the concern about cattle supplies is about.
There were approximately 11.2 million cattle on feed September 1, that’s 1% MORE than a year ago.
But look one line deeper. Only 1.617 million cattle were placed into large feedlots during August. That's 9% fewer than last year and the lowest August placement since the current series began in 1996.
Those numbers aren't contradictory. One tells us what's in the pipeline. The other tells us what's entering it. And that's an important distinction when we're trying to understand where beef supply may be headed.
Cattle already in feedlots can continue moving toward harvest. Heavy carcass weights can also help maintain beef tonnage even when fewer animals are available. But eventually the cattle entering the front of the system matter. Fewer placements today can mean fewer fed cattle available to processors months from now. And that ripples through the entire chain:
Feeder cattle → feedlots → packer utilization → beef production → wholesale beef → the meat case
It also helps explain something that can otherwise look contradictory. America can simultaneously have:
• historically tight cattle supplies
• expensive feeder cattle
• beef plants struggling for utilization
• processors rationalizing slaughter capacity
• and plenty of cattle currently sitting in feedlots.
They're different snapshots of different points in the same biological cycle. Beef has a long clock. We can change a tariff next week. We can change a processing schedule tomorrow. We cannot manufacture another feeder animal overnight.
That's why sometimes the most important number in a cattle report isn't how many animals are there.
It's how many are coming next.
