💰 Did you know the ATO could be sitting on super that belongs to you?

Thousands of Aussies have super they don't even know about — and it might be yours.

This can happen when:
🔹 You've got an old, inactive low-balance account that got transferred to the ATO
🔹 Your employer set aside super guarantee payments that never made it to your fund
🔹 A government super payment hasn't landed in an active account yet

The fix takes minutes — just check myGov, ATO online services, or the ATO app.

If you find money sitting there, get it moved into your active fund so it can actually start earning for you again instead of gathering dust.

Want a hand checking, or want to chat about what it means for your super strategy? Reach out to the team at RGA — we're always happy to help. 📞 07 3289 1700

⛽ Good news at the bowser — for a little longer.

The Government has extended fuel excise relief for July through to 2 August 2026, keeping petrol and diesel around 16c/L cheaper than they otherwise would be.
🔹 Fuel excise: down from 52.6c to 36.6c/L
🔹 Heavy Vehicle Road User Charge: down from 32.4c to 16.4c/L

If you run a fleet or rely on freight and transport, this is welcome short-term relief on operating costs. Just remember — your Fuel

Tax Credit rates will move in line with these changes too, so it's worth checking you're claiming correctly.

Rates are set to return to normal from 3 August, so now's a good time to plan ahead for the shift back.

Need help working through what this means for your business — cash flow, fuel tax credits, or forward planning? Get in touch with the team at RGA. 👇

🚗 Buying a car for the business this year? The 2027 limits just moved. If a new work vehicle is on your radar, here's what's changing from 1 July 2026:
✅ New car limit: $69,883 — the max value you can use to calculate depreciation on a business car
✅ GST credit cap: $6,353 — even if the car costs more, your GST credit doesn't grow with it
✅ Luxury car tax thresholds: $91,661 (fuel-efficient) / $80,809 (all other vehicles)

The bottom line? Whether it's the work ute or an addition to the fleet, these numbers directly affect what you can actually claim.

💡 Timing and structure matter — if you're planning a purchase before or after 1 July, talk to us first so you don't leave money on the table.

⚠️ ATO complaints are up 127% this year.
That's not a typo. Almost 3,000 complaints lodged with the Tax Ombudsman in just ten months — mostly about debt collection, penalties and interest charges.

Why? The ATO is chasing outstanding tax debts harder than it has in years, and a lot of businesses are getting caught out — refunds swallowed by old debts, Director Penalty Notices arriving out of nowhere, payment plans falling over, interest stacking up faster than expected.

Here's the part that matters: it's working for people who push back. Close to a third of penalty and interest complaints resulted in some kind of reduction. A well-prepared case can genuinely move the needle.

If you're sitting on a tax debt, penalty or GIC charge and hoping it'll sort itself out — it won't. The businesses getting the best outcomes are the ones who move early, document everything, and bring in someone to negotiate on their behalf.

🚨 Is your trust or company structure about to land on the ATO's radar? If you run your business through a company or trust, this one's for you.

The ATO has released new guidance (PCG 2025/5) that spells out exactly how it will treat income earned from your personal skills and effort when that income is routed through a company or trust.

Even if your business technically ticks the boxes as a "Personal Services Business," that doesn't automatically protect you — the ATO can still apply anti-avoidance rules if the arrangement looks like it was mainly set up to save tax.

🚩 What raises red flags:
– Splitting income with family who've done little or no work
– Large profits parked in the company with no genuine short-term purpose
– Directing profits to entities mainly because they're taxed more favourably

✅ The good news: there's a transition period. Genuinely review and correct your arrangements by 30 June 2027 and you're unlikely to face action on what you've fixed.

The bigger the gap between who does the work and who pays the tax on it, the more attention your structure is likely to attract.

Don't wait for a review letter to find out where you stand — a proactive conversation now is a lot cheaper than an ATO audit later.

📢 Budget Update: What's Changed Since 12 May
The 2026-27 Federal Budget sparked plenty of debate — and the Government has since walked back or refined several key proposals.

Here's the latest:
💰 CGT changes — The planned move from the 50% discount to an indexation model is still on the table, but there's good news too: a new Innovative Business CGT Concession is being designed for early-stage investors and start-up founders, and the small business turnover threshold for the active asset reduction is set to jump from $2m to $10m from 1 July 2027.

🏛️ Testamentary trusts — Genuine testamentary trusts will now be exempt from the new 30% minimum tax rate, provided they meet certain conditions.

🏠 SMSF borrowing — Following negotiations with the Greens, SMSFs will lose the ability to borrow for residential property purchases going forward (with existing arrangements grandfathered).

These are still moving pieces, and how they land will matter for your structure, your estate plan, or your SMSF strategy.

⏰ Payday Super has landed — is your business ready?
From 1 July 2026, super isn't a quarterly job anymore. Every time you run payroll, the clock starts ticking — you've got just 7 business days to get super into your employees' funds.

No more waiting until quarter-end to catch an error. Shortfalls are now assessed per payday, and penalties for getting it wrong have gone up too.

⚠️ There's also a timing trap for June/July pay runs — pay it at the wrong time and you could accidentally create a shortfall even though you've paid. If you're not 100% sure how this affects your July pay runs, it's worth checking rather than guessing.

3 things to do now:
✅ Check your payroll software & clearing house are set up for the new timeline
✅ Review your cash flow — super is now a more frequent outgoing
✅ Make sure your payroll team understands the new rules

We're helping RGA clients get ahead of this with readiness reviews and payroll checks. If you want a hand, get in touch — better to sort it now than deal with a compliance headache later.

🗓️ Small business owners — 30 June is coming fast. Are you ready?
This is the time of year where the right moves can save you thousands in tax. But only if you act BEFORE the clock runs out.
If your business turns over under $10M, here's what you should be looking at right now:
✅ Prepay expenses — rent, leases, subscriptions, training — pay before 30 June and claim the deduction this year
✅ Instant asset write-off — assets under $20,000 can be immediately written off if installed and ready to use by 30 June
✅ Bring forward repairs & maintenance — get the work done and invoiced before year-end
✅ Pay super before 30 June — contributions are only deductible when received by the fund. Don't leave it to the last minute!
✅ Write off bad debts — if you know a debt won't be recovered, write it off before 30 June
✅ Accrued expenses — wages, bonuses, directors' fees — if the obligation exists at 30 June, you may be able to claim it now
⚠️ Also a heads up — the ATO Small Business Clearing House closes at 11:59pm AEST on 30 June. If you use it to pay super, make sure your final payment is processed in time. PayDay Super starts 1 July — a whole new world begins!
We've put together a practical checklist covering everything you need to know and the information to pull together for your tax return.

⏰ 30 June is less than 4 weeks away — are you leaving money on the table?

If you're an employee, investor, or rental property owner, there are some simple things you can do RIGHT NOW to reduce your tax bill before the financial year ends.

We're talking things like:
✅ Work tools & equipment under $300 — buy before 1 July and claim it this year
✅ Work-related clothing, memberships, and subscriptions — prepay them now
✅ Income protection insurance — often fully deductible, often forgotten
✅ Self-education costs tied to your current job
✅ Car expenses — make sure your logbook is up to date
✅ Superannuation — a personal (after-tax) super contribution before 30 June could mean a tax deduction AND a boost to your retirement savings. Don't forget to lodge your Notice of Intent to Claim with your fund!

The key is taking action BEFORE 30 June — not after.

We've put together a practical checklist to help you know exactly what to do and what information to pull together for your tax return this year.
