**UK Expats in Australia: Key Changes to State Pension Top-Ups from April 2026**

From **6 April 2026**, new rules will apply to voluntary UK National Insurance (NI) contributions made from abroad. If you're planning to boost your UK State Pension while living in Australia, here's what you need to know:

# # # 🔄 What’s Changing

* **Class 2 NI contributions** (approx. £182/year) will no longer be available for periods spent abroad.
* **Class 3 contributions** (approx. £923/year) will become the only voluntary option for topping up future qualifying years.
* New eligibility requirements will apply: to begin making contributions from abroad after April 2026, you must have either:

* 10 consecutive years of UK residence, or
* 10 full tax years of UK NI contributions made while living in the UK.

✅ What This Does and Does Not Mean

* You **can still make Class 2 contributions after April 2026**, but only for tax years **prior to 6 April 2026**, provided you meet current eligibility rules (3 years of UK residence or contributions).
* From 6 April 2026 onward, **any top-ups must be at Class 3 rates** and meet the stricter eligibility criteria.
* The key change is about **the period being topped up**, not when you make the payment. **Class 2 is still available post-2026 for eligible pre-2026 gaps**.

🛠 Recommended Actions

>Check your State Pension forecast**:

>Log in or register via Government Gateway *(you can create an account with an Australian passport)*: https://www.gov.uk/log-in-register-hmrc-online-services
Or call HMRC for assistance: +44 191 218 3600
>Apply to top up** via your Gateway account (preferred), or submit Form CF83: [Apply to pay voluntary NI when abroad https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-to-pay-voluntary-national-insurance-contributions-when-abroad-cf83

📌 Budget 2025: Other Key Updates for Expats

>Inheritance Tax (IHT)**: From April 2027, unspent UK pensions will be included in your estate for IHT. This removes their previous exemption and could mean a 40% tax on death.
>State Pension Increase**: A 4.8% rise is due in April 2026, but expats in Australia who are in receipt of payments already will **not receive this increase** due to the absence of a reciprocal uprating agreement.
>Pension Age**: Still set to rise to 67 by 2028.
>Private Pension Contributions**: From April 2029, salary sacrifice NI relief will be capped at £2,000/year.
>Residency-Based IHT Reform**: If you’ve been UK tax-resident for more than 10 years, your worldwide estate could remain within UK IHT scope for 10 years after leaving.

📣 Final Thoughts

These changes may increase the cost of topping up, but they do not remove your ability to build your UK pension. If you’ve got fewer than 10 qualifying years and want to take advantage of the lower Class 2 rate, reviewing your position now could be beneficial.

📢 Important Deadline Update 📢
UK Expats in Australia – Are You Missing Out on UK State Pension Benefits? 🇬🇧➡️🇦🇺

If you’ve lived or worked in the UK, you may be able to top up your UK State Pension by making voluntary National Insurance Contributions (NICs). Many expats don’t realise they could boost their retirement income by thousands of pounds over time.

✅ Check your UK State Pension forecast – Find out what you're entitled to and if you can increase it.
✅ Who can top up? – If you have 3+ years of UK National Insurance contributions, you may be eligible.
✅ Upcoming deadline – The opportunity to backpay contributions to 2006 is closing soon, but there are options for those who act in time.

📢 Important Deadline Update 📢

Although this April’s deadline still stands, there will be some leeway for those struggling to get through to HMRC before the cut-off:

Anyone unable to contact the DWP before the deadline can submit an online call-back request form.

If you submit a request by 5 April, you’ll still be able to pay voluntary NICs back to 2006 after the deadline has passed.
Make sure to save a screenshot of your call-back confirmation message—HMRC should return your call within eight weeks.
