Selling at the Top vs. Buying at the Dip - Timing the Market Is Hard. Here's What Works Instead.

Everyone wants to sell at the peak and buy at the bottom. Almost nobody actually does it successfully.

Why? Because at the peak, everything feels great and selling feels unnecessary. And at the bottom, fear is loudest but buying feels terrifying.

What actually works for long-term investors is a different approach:

✅ Regularly reviewing whether holdings are fairly valued or overpriced
✅ Taking some profits from businesses that have run hard and look stretched
✅ Maintaining a watchlist of quality businesses you'd love to own at the right price
✅ Having the discipline, and the cash, to act when opportunities appear

It's not about timing the market. It's about being prepared for whenever the market gives you an opportunity.

Is your portfolio set up for that?

Let's talk strategy. Reach out to your Burrell adviser or call us on 1300 4 BURRELL (1300 4 287 735) - because the best time to prepare is before the opportunity arrives.

The 70/30 Rule of Uncertain Markets
When facing uncertainty, experienced investors don't try to predict the future - they assign probabilities to outcomes and position accordingly.

Right now, a sensible framework for the current global environment might look like this:

70% - Short-term resolution. Markets stabilise, supply disruptions ease, and portfolios recover their recent dips.

30% - Prolonged disruption. Conflict escalates, energy markets remain volatile, inflation re-accelerates, and central banks are forced to respond.

That 30% isn't a reason to panic. It's a reason to plan.

Having a buffer, whether that's cash, quality defensive stocks, or reduced exposure to overpriced assets, means you're not caught off guard if the minority outcome becomes reality.

Good investing isn't about being right. It's about being ready.

Is your portfolio ready for either scenario? Talk to your Burrell adviser on 1300 4 BURRELL (1300 4 287 735) - let's build a plan that works in both directions.
