Sequencing risk is the risk of experiencing negative market returns at an unfavourable time.

The ages of 50-75 are considered to be the ‘High Sequencing Risk Zone’. This is the period when super balances tend to be high, but the number of years left to contribute to super (and therefore offset the impact of market downturns) is low.

The chart below shows the impact of sequencing risk:

Both investors started with $100,000 at age 45.

They contributed an additional $10,000 per year and received an average return of 7% p.a.

Investor 1 incurred a loss of 15% at the age of 46, giving their investment plenty of time to recover before they retired at age 65.

Investor 2 incurred a loss of 15% at the age of 64, one year before they retired.

While they both withdrew the same annual pension of $60,000, investor 2’s retirement savings ran out seven years earlier because of sequencing risk.

Sequencing risk is unavoidable, but there are ways to lessen its impact. In this article we share some top tips for managing sequencing risk to make your retirement savings last longer.

Australia has the sixth highest life expectancy in the world. We can expect to live to 83.20 years old, on average. This is around 10 years longer than the global average.

That’s good news, right?

The only problem is that a longer life expectancy means you have to rely on your retirement savings for far longer. And that’s far easier said than done when you’re dealing with volatile market returns and a high cost of living.

In this article we share some top tips for how to make your retirement savings last longer.

We all want to have a long and healthy life. But with volatile market returns and high cost of living playing havoc on retirement savings, many retirees face the real risk of outliving their money. We take a look at some ways to make your retirement savings last longer, without sacrificing your lifestyle.

While no-one enjoys market volatility and high costs of living, it’s retirees that have the most to lose from it. When you’re no longer working and contributing to super, it can be downright scary to see your super balance decrease.

Neither growth traps nor value traps are good for your portfolio. But growth traps, which we’ve seen a lot of over the last 12 months, are definitely the worst of the two.

This chart tracks value and growth trap stocks over 25 years. While value traps underperformed by an average of 9.5% per year, growth traps were far worse with an underperformance of 13.0% per year.

Want to know how to avoid a growth trap? We provide some tips here.
