Under the new changes, the second proposed method is to apportion the capital gains on either side of 1 July 2027 on a days basis.

James explains that this calculation can be complicated and won't suit all businesses, but it will be cheaper than getting a valuation.

With the new changes, you may need to get a valuation done on 1 July 2027.

Confused about how CGT will be calculated from 1 July 2027? You're not alone!

In this Tax Explainer, James breaks down the second batch of proposed CGT changes and the two proposed methods.

1. Formal valuation: obtaining a valuation of the asset as at 1 July 2027.
2. Apportionment method: using a formula to apportion the capital gain between the pre and post 1 July 2027 periods.

Watch James's newest video to understand how this works in practice.

Setting up new employees can pose a significant privacy risk when you're collecting tax file numbers and bank details manually.

With Payday Super now in effect, that risk has gotten bigger. Get it wrong from the start and the first super payment can bounce, leaving you liable for the Superannuation Guarantee Charge.

XOnboard solves this. It's a free integration that links directly to Xero payroll and sends your new employee a secure link to fill in their details all in one place.

We recommend XOnboard to all small business owners using Xero. Read our full review here https://jdscott.co/news/xonboard-review/

Could your trust structure face an effective tax rate as high as 60%?

The Treasury has proposed a 30% minimum tax on discretionary trusts from 1 July 2028. The catch is that bucket companies won't get franking credits for tax the trust has already paid, pushing the effective tax rate to 60%+.

It's not law yet, but these changes could reshape how wealth is built through small businesses in Australia.

James breaks down what's proposed, with practical examples in our latest video.
