I thought it was 5 runs, a four would have drawn it and a six would have won it.
One ball. Seven runs. A decision that changed cricket forever.
In 1981, during the World Series Cup final at the MCG, New Zealand needed 7 off the last ball. Under pressure, Australian captain Greg Chappell instructed his brother Trevor Chappell to bowl underarm to No.10 Brian McKechnie - leaving no chance of a match-winning six.
On commentary, elder brother Ian Chappell reacted instantly:
“No, Greg… you can’t do that.”
The delivery was within the laws at the time, but it was widely condemned as contrary to the spirit of the game. The rules were later amended, ensuring such an incident could not happen again.
Not just a finish - a moment that still divides cricket.
