The ASX held its ground this week despite a heavy domestic agenda. The Federal Budget confirmed the CGT changes markets had been watching closely, with the 50% discount replaced by a 30% minimum effective rate floor, and negative gearing on established properties set to be disallowed from July 2027.

April jobs data then surprised to the downside, fuelling speculation that the RBA may pause after three consecutive hikes. The ASX surged 1.5% on Thursday in response, with mining leading the way — BHP up 1.1% and Evolution Mining advancing 3.0%.

March inflation is still running at 4.6% annually. April CPI lands next week and will carry real weight for the rate outlook.
