Every year I see many of the same tax mistakes costing individuals and business owners time, money and unnecessary stress.

Some result in missed deductions, others increase bookkeeping costs, and a few can create much bigger compliance issues than people realise.

I have put together the 15 most common tax mistakes I see every year, along with practical tips showing how they can often be avoided.

Hopefully it helps you avoid a few of them too!

📢 Reminder: Payday Super Starts Today

From 1 July 2026, employers are required to pay employees' superannuation at the same time as their wages.

If you employ staff, now is the time to make sure your payroll and super processes are ready.

This change is designed to:
✅ Get super into employees' accounts sooner
✅ Reduce unpaid super
✅ Make payroll obligations simpler over time

If you're a business owner, it's worth checking that your payroll software, clearing house and cash flow processes are set up correctly to avoid late payment issues.

If you're unsure how the new rules affect your business, feel free to get in touch. I'm happy to help you work through the changes.

One of the most common comments I hear from new clients, whether it's for an individual tax return or a business, is:

"I paid my accountant every year, but I never really heard from them."

The tax return or BAS was lodged.
The financial statements were prepared.
The invoice was sent, or you paid them every month.

But there was very little communication, explanation or opportunity to ask questions.

To me, accounting should be about much more than lodging forms.

Whether you're an employee wanting to understand your tax return, or a business owner making important financial decisions, you deserve to understand what's happening and have someone you can turn to when questions arise.

I know not every client needs regular meetings or phone calls, but everyone deserves an accountant who communicates, explains things clearly and is there when they need support.

That's the approach I aim to provide.

Everyone deserves an accountant who doesn't just lodge the paperwork, but helps them understand it.

Confession from an accountant...

I can tell a lot about a business just by opening their accounting file.

Within about 30 seconds I usually know whether I'm about to find:

✅ Beautifully reconciled accounts

😐 A few things needing attention

🔥 Or what can only be described as an archaeological dig through years of bookkeeping history.

No judgement though — most business owners are busy running their business, not spending their weekends reconciling transactions and tidying up accounts.

The good news is that even small improvements can make a big difference to the quality of your reporting, tax outcomes and decision-making.

If you're not quite sure whether your file falls into category 1, 2 or 3, feel free to reach out. I'm always happy to do a quick once-over and point out any areas that might benefit from some attention.

(And don't worry, I've seen far worse than you think! 😄)

The 2026 Federal Budget introduced some major proposed tax changes for both small business owners and investors, including changes to trusts, negative gearing, capital gains tax and the instant asset write-off.

There’s been a lot of headlines and confusion already, so I’ve put together a practical breakdown of what’s been announced, what it could mean, and some of the key things business owners and investors should be aware of moving forward.

Tonight’s Federal Budget announcement has definitely kept us busy already! If you’re wondering how the changes affect you or your business, feel free to reach out once the dust settles and the fine print starts making sense.

(And no… not everything is suddenly “tax deductible” 😅)

🌟 As featured in SmartCompany:

I spoke about the $20,000 instant asset write-off the other day, but this goes a bit deeper than that.

I’m seeing a consistent pattern across small businesses right now, especially leading into 30 June, and it’s not actually about the rule itself.

It’s about the decisions being made around it.

I recently shared some insights in a SmartCompany article on this 👇

Should you go and buy something before June 30 to reduce your tax? An expert says you're asking the wrong question.

🚗 Victoria’s 20% Rego Rebate — Are You Eligible?

The Victorian Government is offering a 20% rebate on car registration, but there are a few key things people are missing 👇

✔ It’s not automatic — you need to apply
✔ Only applies if the vehicle is in your personal name
✔ Company vehicles don’t qualify
✔ You can claim for up to 2 vehicles

Most people will save up to $186 per car, so it’s definitely worth checking.

Applications open 1 June 2026 and close 31 July 2026 — so don’t miss the window.

I’ve put together a simple breakdown covering:

Who qualifies
How to apply, and
What this means in the bigger picture
