Despite growing uncertainty surrounding proposed Federal Budget measures, the economic outlook for Cairns and Far North Queensland remains resilient.

Several key tax reforms are yet to be legislated, but they're already attracting significant attention from businesses, investors and advisers across the country. While political debate continues, the real focus for business owners should be understanding how these proposed changes could impact business structures, investment strategies and long-term planning.

In a changing economic environment, informed decision-making is more important than ever. Rather than reacting to headlines, businesses should take the time to understand the potential implications and seek advice before making major decisions.

Staying informed today can help position your business for success tomorrow.

Our Budget Breakfast Quiz winner this year is JCU. Congratulations

Good to see the education of our best and brightest is in good hands!
The banter was a little sparse this year (everyone was paying attention to the presentation?)

So the neatest correct entry won 😉

The table members will be receiving a fuel voucher.
We again thank everyone for their continuing support

Our Managing Partner Carl Valentine recently had the privilege of attending a roundtable discussion with the Hon. Steve Minnikin, Minister for Small & Family Business and the Townsville Chamber of Commerce, where leaders came together to discuss Queensland’s small and family business sector.

Carl was able to raise a number of areas of concern relating to payroll tax with the Minister including:

• the need to make the regional employer payroll tax discount a permanent feature of the tax payroll tax system (currently set to expire on 30 June 2030);
• the suggestion by the Queensland Revenue Office that regional businesses using backpackers or other itinerant workers may not be eligible to claim the regional discount;
• the need to index the payroll tax thresholds to match wages growth to avoid “bracket creep” creating additional payroll tax costs for Queensland businesses; and
• opportunities to simplify payroll tax compliance by using Single Touch Payroll (STP) data already shared by all employers with the ATO.

The 12 May 2026 Federal Budget was also a topic of discussion and while this is a Federal issue, the Queensland Government has an opportunity to provide payroll tax relief to put our businesses on a level footing with those in other States when it comes to the duty cost of potential future asset transfers in connection with the changes to how it is proposed discretionary trust distributions will be taxed from 1 July 2028.

Yesterday we welcomed 260 members of the Townsville business community to The Ville for our annual Federal Budget Corporate Breakfast. The event brought together business leaders, professionals, high school students and industry stakeholders as our expert team unpacked the key announcements delivered by the ALP Government and explored what this year’s Federal Budget means for individuals, businesses, North Queensland and the broader Australian economy.

A huge thank you to our VIP guests for joining us, our expert speakers for sharing valuable insights, and our table sponsors for their continued support of this event. We also sincerely appreciate everyone who donated breakfast items to support Fuel For Schools Ltd and help make a difference in our community.
