Not every student we meet is going to choose a career in transport.

And that’s okay.

Because our goal has never been to put every student behind the wheel. 🚛

It’s to inspire them to think bigger. To back themselves. To see what’s possible — and to want to do better and be better.

This student told us:

“Yes, it has made me more motivated to run my own business.”

And honestly? That’s the stuff that matters.

If Careers in Gear can spark an idea, build a little confidence or make a young person believe they can create something of their own, then we’re doing what we set out to do.

Sometimes you don’t realise how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep everyday life moving.

Until you stop and think about it.

🚛 The drivers.
🔧 The mechanics.
📦 The warehouse teams.
🗺️ The planners.
📋 The people keeping it all organised.

One session can be enough to make you see an industry differently — and maybe even make you think, “I want to be part of that.”

That’s what Careers in Gear is all about. Giving students a chance to see the people, the pathways and the possibilities behind an industry that keeps Australia moving.

Because we need transport for pretty much everything in life.

Your food at the supermarket? Transport.
Your new sneakers? Transport.
The fuel in your car? Transport.
The materials that build your house? Transport.
The phone in your hand? Yep… transport. 📱🚛

It’s one of those industries you don’t always think about — until you realise it’s behind almost everything we do.

And that means there are A LOT of careers in it.

📍 Based in the Bohle - Delivering to local Townsville area

This role is about more than just getting behind the wheel. You’ll be part of the team making sure parts get where they need to go, while building skills that can take you further in your career.

What you’ll be doing:
🔧 Picking, packing & dispatching stock
📦 Checking incoming stock & paperwork
💻 Entering parts data into computer systems
🚚 Delivering parts to customers
🔄 Collecting parts from suppliers
🤝 Providing great customer service

What they’re looking for:
✔️ Good communication & customer service skills
✔️ Strong organisation & attention to detail
✔️ Computer skills
✔️ Good time management
✔️ Someone who can work independently and as part of a team
✔️ A willingness to learn and get stuck in!

🚛 Careers in Gear | Stop 3: National Heavy Vehicle Regulator

Our final stop for the day was with the NHVR, bringing together an important side of the transport industry — road safety and compliance.

Students explored the key messages behind the Don’t Muck With A Truck campaign and learned why safe following distances, stopping and turning safely and understanding the impact of heavy vehicles are so important on our roads.

They then got up close with a roadside inspection vehicle and the equipment used by NHVR officers, giving them a real insight into the people and processes that help keep Australia’s roads safe.
A valuable way to finish an incredible day — giving students a broader understanding of the transport industry and the many different careers that help keep it moving.

A huge thank you to Andrew Gill for his ongoing commitment to Careers in Gear and for giving students his time, knowledge and genuine access to the real world of compliance.

🚛 Careers in Gear | Stop 2: Official Followmont Transport Pty Ltd

Next stop — Followmont, where students got to see how the freight network connects their remote communities with the rest of Australia.

From climbing into a prime mover to exploring truck combinations and the many roles involved in getting freight moving, students got a real feel for what a career in transport can look like.

For students seeing that connection between their communities and the wider transport network was a powerful part of the day.
Sometimes you just need to see it to realise you could be part of it.
