The ATO has a new data matching program running from the 2026-27 financial year through to 2028-29, and it’s worth knowing about if you or your contractors travel for work.
The program cross-references passenger movement data from Home Affairs, arrival and departure dates, visa and residency status, against your tax returns, business income and contractor arrangements.
It isn’t about targeting specific industries, but tourism and hospitality, construction and trades, and digital or professional services are more likely to be affected, since travel and contractor arrangements are common in all three.
The kind of mismatch that draws attention is travel activity that doesn’t line up with a residency claim, business income that looks continuous while travel data shows extended time overseas, or a contractor claiming to work locally while their travel record says otherwise.
