💰🧾 TAX TIME TIP: Don’t Spend $100 to Save $30! 🧾💰

As 30 June approaches, one of the most common calls we receive is:

👉 “Should I buy something to save on tax?”

Our answer is usually:

✅ Only if you actually need it!

A tax deduction doesn't mean the government pays for the whole item. It simply reduces your taxable income.

For most people, their tax rate will be around 30%.

So if you buy something for $100:

💸 You spend $100
📉 You may save around $30 in tax
❌ You're still $70 out of pocket

Buying tools, equipment, technology or work-related items you genuinely need can make sense.

Buying something purely because "it's tax deductible" often doesn't make sense.

Remember:

🚫 A bad purchase doesn't become a good purchase because it's deductible.
✅ The best tax deduction is one that helps you earn income or makes your business more efficient.

What’s more expensive; paying accounting fees, or not paying accounting fees?

A case study from last week:

A newly created micro business in a low-risk industry approached us for a quote. After we provided it, we were told accounting fees were “too expensive” and they’d “worry about it later.”

Instead, they:

Set up a company themselves for $611
Committed to $329 in annual ASIC fees
Locked themselves into ongoing accounting and tax costs $1,000+ higher each year than if they’d started as a sole trader

On top of that, there are likely setup errors with the company that will cost even more to fix.

All of this… when they could have started cheaply and simply as a sole trader. (Don't get me wrong - companies do have their place but not for this newly created micro business)

Fast forward 12 months:

No accountant
Messy or incomplete records
Double the fees to clean it up
Unknown tax and GST liabilities
Likely cash flow stress when it all catches up

This is a story we see far too often.

Good accounting doesn’t cost you money, it saves you money.
Especially when it comes to getting set up properly from day one.

If you’re starting a business, don’t cut corners on the foundations.

Get it right from the start.
