Something significant is about to change in the way accounting practices across Australia operate and whether you realise it or not, it is going to affect you as a client.

From 1 July 2026, the Australian Government is bringing accountants, lawyers, real estate agents, and other professional services under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) laws. These professions are known as “gatekeeper professions” because the work they do in setting up companies, structuring trusts, facilitating property transactions. These services can and have been exploited by criminals to disguise the origins of dirty money.

Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) Changes - Important Changes for how we will work with All Clients

The Australian Government is expanding its Anti-money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/TCF) laws to cover accountants, lawyers, real estate agents and some other professionals. AUSTRAC is the government agency that oversees financial crime prevention and it calls these "Gatekeeper Professions".

From 1 July 2026, these professions will be regulated in the same way banks have been for years. New laws will change the way every accounting practice in Australia works with their clients. It is not complicated, but it is important and understanding what is ahead will help things run smoothly when the time comes.
