Fuel Levies & Freight Rates

Fuel prices fluctuate constantly, but that doesn’t mean your profit margins have to take the hit.
One common trap for Australian transport operators is absorbing price hikes rather than passing them through. When was the last time you adjusted your freight rates or fuel surcharge mechanism?

Actionable steps to safeguard your revenue:
⛽ Audit fuel surcharge clauses: Ensure current customer contracts reflect real-time bowser fluctuations.
⛽ Review indexation intervals: Shift from quarterly adjustments to monthly or fortnightly reviews if volatility continues.
⛽ Stop subsidising freight: If a contract doesn’t cover cost movements, renegotiate or reallocate fleet capacity.
You can't dictate the price at the pump, but you can control what you charge to move the freight.
Are your current fuel levies fully covering your pump costs, or are you eating into your margins?

Speak to your accountant or finance adviser to benchmark your rate structures today.

A customer approached us looking to expand their business from concreting into the civil space.

The applicant had used a different broker previously but had been required to contribute a deposit. We were able to get him approved with no deposit by using collateral as security, helping him keep his cash in the bank rather than tying it up in a depreciating asset.

The applicant purchased a specialised 2003 tipper truck and a new excavator, which he has since put to work generating additional income for his growing business.

From a ute and a 1.7-tonne excavator to a growing earthmoving business. 😎

Two years ago, this customer started working on the side during his off-rotation from the mines, with just his ute and a 1.7-tonne excavator.

Fast forward a year, and he had added a tipper, Positrack and 3.5-tonne excavator to his fleet, giving him the confidence to leave the mines and focus on his business full-time.

With hard work, the right equipment and the right finance structure, he has turned a side hustle into a growing earthmoving business.

We recently financed this 2018 Kenworth T610 for one of our newer customers based in Balmoral. He wasted no time putting the truck to work, delivering several dozers, excavators and prime movers within his first few weeks.

With a strong work ethic and a great start, we’re looking forward to supporting him as he continues to grow his business. 😎

Its that time of the year again, Cash Flow Benefits When Purchasing Equipment Before Christmas!

Last month, we discussed the differences between Cash vs Line of Credit. This month, we’re focusing on another important consideration, cash flow.

The Christmas and New Year period can be challenging for cash flow, particularly for businesses with 30-day debtor terms. While expenses such as wages, holiday pay, fuel, insurance, GST and loan commitments continue, income generated in late December and January may not be received until February.

If you’re considering purchasing a $500,000 prime mover, it’s worth looking beyond the purchase price and considering what that decision does to your working capital.

Don't Forget the GST
There can also be an important GST cash-flow consideration. For a $500,000 GST-inclusive equipment purchase, the GST component is approximately $45,455. Subject to your eligibility and BAS reporting cycle, that GST credit may be claimable through your BAS and Boost well needed cashflow in January.

When considering a major equipment purchase, the question isn't simply "Can I afford to pay cash?" It is also "Where is my cash more valuable, tied up in the equipment or available inside my business?"

Both cash and finance can have advantages depending on your financial position, tax circumstances and business objectives. Before making a decision, speak with your accountant and equipment finance specialist to determine the structure that best supports your business and .

A few years ago a good customer working remotely in Western Australia’s mid north coast, doing earthmoving and work for the local council asked us to speak to one of his subcontracted workers. He had been working as a sole trader for a couple of years and had hired in some machines but wanted to upgrade and grow. Step one was a little dual cab Hino Truck to transport equipment and space in the back to be able to employ and transport additional workers. Shortly after an excavator, a tipper, and a tilt tray to cart around specialised equipment to remote work sites in the outback. The following year, with increased capabilities came increased work and a new 10 tonne excavator, prime mover and a new tilt/slide drop deck trailer were added. As the business grew the structure needed to change and recently in the family trust that was set up we funded this high volume side tipper set, being pulled by one of our favourite trucks, their awesome Mack Superliner. Thank goodness for starlink as it’s the only way to communicate where these guys work, and we are so happy to have played our part in helping to keep the wheels of the economy turning in outback WA!

Client had been in business for two years, operating in the haulage industry, but was looking for a change that would keep him closer to home. With previous experience working in quarries and operating excavators, purchasing a digger was the natural next step.

Over the course of around 12 months, I kept in regular contact, checking in to see how things were progressing until the time was right to move forward with the purchase.

Using the client's existing ABN, I submitted a low doc application to Capital for the maximum amount available. The application was approved within 24 hours, and the client had the digger within a few weeks.

This deal highlights the importance of building long-term relationships. Rather than focusing on a quick transaction, the priority was staying in touch, being available to help whenever needed, and supporting the client until they were ready to take the next step.
