Tuesday Top Tip 💡 Your bank account isn’t the only thing that needs reconciling.

If your business accepts payments through platforms such as Square, Stripe or PayPal, those transactions also need to match your bookkeeping records.

Payment platforms can include:
✔️ Customer payments
✔️ Processing fees
✔️ Refunds
✔️ Chargebacks
✔️ Deposits transferred to your bank account

Because the amount deposited into your bank may be different from the original customer payment after fees or adjustments, simply matching the bank deposit may not tell the full story.

Regular reconciliation helps make sure your sales, fees and deposits are being recorded accurately.

A bookkeeper and an accountant walk into a business…

It sounds like the start of a joke, but the truth is, the two roles work best when they work together.

A bookkeeper generally helps keep the day-to-day financial records accurate, organised and up to date.

That can include things like:
✔️ Bank reconciliations
✔️ Payroll
✔️ Invoicing and bills
✔️ BAS-related bookkeeping
✔️ Keeping records organised

Your accountant can then use that information for higher-level accounting, tax, compliance and advisory work.

Think of it this way:

Your bookkeeper helps keep the financial foundations tidy.
Your accountant uses those foundations to look at the bigger picture.

And when the bookkeeping is accurate and current, your accountant has much better information to work with.

So it’s not really bookkeeper vs accountant.

For many businesses, it’s bookkeeper + accountant.

Tuesday Top Tip 💡 Review your accounts receivable regularly.

It can be easy to focus on bringing in new work while overdue invoices quietly start piling up in the background.

A weekly review of your accounts receivable can help you:

✔️ See which invoices are approaching their due date
✔️ Identify overdue accounts early
✔️ Follow up customers promptly
✔️ Spot recurring payment issues
✔️ Keep a clearer picture of your expected cash flow

The longer an invoice remains unpaid, the easier it can be for it to slip further down the customer’s priority list.

A quick weekly check can help you stay ahead of overdue accounts rather than trying to catch up later.

Without checking… could you answer these three questions about your business? 👀

1️⃣ How much do your customers currently owe you?
2️⃣ How much do you currently owe your suppliers?
3️⃣ What are your regular monthly business expenses?

You certainly don’t need to have every figure in your business memorised.

But when your bookkeeping is accurate and up to date, finding the answers to questions like these should be relatively easy.

And that matters.

Because having a clear picture of what’s coming in, what needs to go out and what it costs to keep your business running can help you make better-informed decisions rather than relying on what happens to be sitting in the bank account today.

Good bookkeeping isn’t just about keeping records for BAS and tax time.

It should give you clarity over what’s actually happening in your business.

How many of the three could you answer without checking? 👇

Are your public holiday payments correct?Tuesday Top Tip 💡 Are you up to date with your public holiday payroll?

With the October long weekend just behind us, now is a good time to check that any public holiday payments have been processed correctly.

Depending on the employee’s circumstances, award or agreement, this may mean checking:

✔️ Employees who worked on the public holiday
✔️ Applicable public holiday penalty rates
✔️ Full-time or part-time employees who normally work that day but had the public holiday off
✔️ Ordinary hours and rostered hours
✔️ Any additional entitlements under the relevant award or agreement

Under the National Employment Standards, full-time and part-time employees who would ordinarily work on a public holiday are generally entitled to their base rate for the ordinary hours they would have worked if they are absent because of the public holiday. Employees who actually work may also have additional entitlements such as penalty rates, depending on the applicable award or agreement.

Taking a few minutes to review your payroll after a public holiday can help pick up errors early and keep your records accurate.

Which business owner are you? 👀

A — Reconciled every week. Receipts uploaded. Feeling smug.
B — Mostly organised… with a small receipt pile quietly growing.
C — “I’m pretty sure it’s all in my emails somewhere.”
D — BAS deadline? What BAS deadline? 😅

The truth is, most business owners have probably been more than one of these at some point.

When you’re busy running the business, bookkeeping can very quickly move to the bottom of the list and before you know it, a small backlog has become a much bigger job.

No judgement. We’ve seen it all.

Whether you’re already organised or need some help getting things back under control, Morelli Bookkeeping can help you stay on top of the numbers without it taking over your week.

Tuesday Top Tip 💡 Make it easy for your customers to know when and how to pay.

Clear payment terms on every invoice can help reduce confusion and make it easier for customers to pay you on time.

Make sure your invoices clearly include:

✔️ The invoice date
✔️ The payment due date
✔️ Your preferred payment methods
✔️ Correct bank or payment details
✔️ The invoice number or payment reference
✔️ Any agreed payment terms

The clearer your invoice is, the less room there is for uncertainty or unnecessary delays.

A good invoicing process can also make following up overdue accounts much easier.

A little bookkeeping honesty… with love 😉

There are a few habits that can make bookkeeping much harder than it needs to be.

Things your bookkeeper is quietly hoping you’ll stop doing:
• Leaving receipts in the glovebox
• Using the business card for personal purchases
• Ignoring reconciliation questions for three weeks
• Sending paperwork the night before BAS is due
• Putting “miscellaneous” on everything
• Assuming you’ll remember what that transaction was for later

The good news is that small changes can make a big difference.

Cleaner records, clearer information and better communication all help keep your books accurate and up to date and make life easier for everyone involved.

If your bookkeeping feels a little messier than it should, we can help you get it back under control.

Tuesday Top Tip 💡 Small monthly charges can add up quickly.

Software, apps, memberships and subscriptions can easily become part of the background of running a business, especially when they renew automatically.

Every few months, take some time to review what your business is paying for and ask:

✔️ Are we still using this service?
✔️ Are there duplicate subscriptions?
✔️ Has the price increased?
✔️ Is there a more suitable plan available?
✔️ Is this expense still providing value to the business?

A few unused subscriptions might not seem like much individually, but together they can add up to a significant ongoing expense.

Regularly reviewing your recurring costs is a simple way to keep your business finances a little leaner and more organised.

Fair pay starts with accurate payroll.

Today is International Equal Pay Day, a reminder of the importance of fair and consistent pay for work of equal value.

For business owners, one practical part of getting pay right is making sure your payroll records and processes are accurate and up to date.

That means regularly checking things such as:

✔️ Current pay rates
✔️ Employee classifications
✔️ Allowances and overtime
✔️ Superannuation obligations
✔️ Hours worked and leave records
✔️ Changes to awards or employment arrangements

Accurate payroll helps reduce errors, supports compliance and gives both employers and employees greater confidence that wages and entitlements are being managed correctly.

If it has been a while since you reviewed your payroll processes, today is a good reminder to make sure everything is set up as it should be.
