Healthkick Friday supports any action that improves or protects our mental health. It seems that Gen Z may have stumbled onto something.

They have replaced the hyped up FOMO with JOMO - the 'joy of missing out'/ They have slowed down their lifestyle.

"... It’s not laziness, and it’s not antisocial behaviour. It’s a deliberate, considered choice to opt out of the relentless performance of being seen to be “out there”, and opt into something that actually feels good. Prioritising quiet over noise. Genuine friendships over obligation. And realising that being a little unreachable is more of a status symbol than always being available.

The numbers back it up...... report 32 per cent lower stress levels on average, and sleep 45 minutes longer each night than those still caught in FOMO loops...... 62 per cent of travellers say slow, JOMO-style holidays reduce stress and anxiety and nearly half say it deepens their relationships with loved ones....

FOMO assumes the best version of your life is always happening somewhere else. JOMO knows better.

But peace tends to live a lot closer to home. In fact, it might be right there on my sofa or on that park walk or run, waiting patiently, just where I left it."

There’s a quiet, very confident counter-movement happening in living rooms and on sofas everywhere. And I’m all in.

This article on the standard tax deduction suggests that it will not reduce the compliance burden for taxpayers with larger, legitimate deductions and in fact will increase their compliance costs and risks of audit.

On the other hand, it will hand a larger refund to a substantial proportion of taxpayers who previously only had nominal deduction claims. The government hopes this loss to the revenue may be partly made up by taxpayers who could have claimed more but who lodge their own return with just the standard deduction. Additionally some may decide the compliance burden and risks are too high to warrant a correct claim. These taxpayers will subsidise the others.

Just another example of the redistribution of wealth from the ambitious and hard working to those who do not have to cover any cost of carrying out their professional and employment duties.

Australians will soon join most of the world in having a standard deduction on their tax return. But it could come at a cost to those with dirty clothes.

Riled up about the budget? Agree or disagree, this article puts a little perspective on it. It is a must read.

Also ..... There is a lot of lobbying and campaigning going on with the latest being the realisation that Gen X and Z are investing heavily in property, shares and crypto with the hope of a medium term gain which was to be taxed under the old CGT rules when they sell, after an average holding of 6 years. Their investment made in order to buy their first home.

Albo, Chalmers and Gallagher have now smashed the dream of 2 generations. I wonder now whether Labor won't simply inherit their votes and guarantee their political futures....... which the cynic in me thinks the CGT and neg gear changes are all about.

If the budget got you fired up this last week, I suggest going for a walk and counting all the things your taxes have paid for.

Healthkick Friday looks at ageing and one of the hazards being trips and falls.

Our health declines naturally, but you can take precautions to ensure that you don't stumble over life's hurdles. Or trip on the mat. This article looks at a few tips which might be helpful for our parents or those of us who are older.

For the younger at heart, we can look after our health, strength and balance to keep us steady on our feet for longer. The obvious are exercise regimes, yoga and tai chi, all of which help us to remain supple, maintain good posture and to walk without developing that 'old man' shuffle which can dramatically increase the chances of a trip up.

From lighting to kitchen organisation, here’s how to reduce the risk for yourself or someone you care about.

A post budget slant on the proposition that CGT and Negative Gearing changes will open up housing for young hopeful home buyers.

This article suggests that the barriers to entry are still high, perhaps too high with increasing interest rates the financing requirements and the costs of entry just might be still to high for most.

Then there is my realisation this morning that investors might just be in a better position to buy a second or third new or existing property because they have the equity to borrow and the new negative gearing can be offset against that already positively geared property. That will reduce supply.

Tonight Angus Taylor is to deliver the Coalitions response to the budget. It has been reported that the Coalition has tied the net immigration numbers to the supply of housing. Putting partisan politics aside, this does make some sense because if we have a housing shortage now, we have to build a new home for every migrant family before we start building homes for Aussies who want one. There is no logical argument to suggest that immigration does not impact available housing.

So in summary, young aspirants might just have to wait longer than predicted to be able to buy their first home.

The share of home lending to investors is at its highest level in almost a decade, but experts think they are set to face new competition.

The budget has finally landed with all its changes designed to address intergenerational fairness. Read: take from ageing Aussies who have worked hard to accumulate their wealth from after tax dollars and make life easier for our aspiring youth.

On my analysis the tax grab will take years to materialise, apart from the 30% minimum tax rate for trusts, assuming of course that trust businesses and investments do not rollover into companies or individuals hands before the starting date and then be taxed at the lower applicable tax rates. Little if any to be gained here.

On the other hand, the delayed and staged tax concessions to taxpayers generally will add up over the next 2 years to little more than a coffee a week. Far less than the becried 'sandwich and milkshake' tax cuts of a few years back. So no cost of living relief in this budget and fortunately so because the RBA would have swooped to take it all back and more in another interest rate rise.

So that leaves the improved housing supply issue. Again, any improved is well into the future, so good luck on that one as the immigration projections will continue to swallow new builds and leave everyday young Aussies still battling to buy.

The widening wealth gap between generations has been framed as the government’s primary target in this year’s budget. Here’s what’s in it for each age group.

Healthkick Friday reminds us to balance our exercise regime in order to get the benefits of a full life and healthy ageing.

This includes passive exercise, stretching, strength and cardio exercises.

As strength training surges in popularity, many people are giving up on cardio – and it’s a mistake.

Even Waleed is giving the government a serve this morning.

"....How lamentable, then, if intergenerational inequity has gotten so serious that it erodes trust even more than that. How precarious if the method of restoring that trust is to break your word, licensing voters to doubt what you say. And how damning if it has reached such a point, when the cliff of intergenerational inequity has been coming so clearly for so long yet could only be addressed in an atmosphere of crisis."

Labor enjoys a heroically dominant parliamentary position and the Coalition is in disarray. But the government has clearly detected an even bigger shift in the mood and hopes of the electorate.

With the upcoming budget in mind this morning, this article may be of some interest if you are tiring of the same old party politics and the unpalatable views of the extremist alternatives or independents..

Australians don’t care about ideology. They want solutions that will work. I have a plan.

Healthkick Friday reminds us to balance our exercise for maximum health impact.

This article says"...... The “lifting” motion in which our muscles shorten – known as concentric exercise – is important. But what happens on the way down, when we lower a weight and our muscles lengthen – known as eccentric exercise – can be just as beneficial,...."

We tend to focus on the upwards part of movement, but what happens on the way down can be just as beneficial.
