BURS Cultivates Tax Knowledge Amongst Students
Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) is taking Tax Education to another level. This morning we hosted a group of Form 3 students from Molopo Community Junior Secondary School (CJSS) situated in Phitshane Molopo, Goodhope District.
A noble request by the three Commerce and Business Studies teachers (Ms Kesegofetse Papana, Ms. Selmancia Kgomotso and Mr. Leokeditswe Monnawaletsatsi) turned into a very productive and powerful interaction between the students and tax educators from the Revenue Service.
The aim of the educational tour was;
• To educate the learners about revenue collection and taxation
• Tax compliance and enforcement
• Basic skills on calculating VAT
• The differences between zero rated supplies, standard rated supplies and exempt rated supplies with examples.
The students were intrigued by the presentation to the extent that they even asked about the necessary requirements for one to be a tax-collector.
BURS is delighted to host pupils and students as they remain key in its tax education efforts. This is part of its broader Community Outreach initiatives as well as cultivating tax knowledge at a younger age to build a tax compliant nation in the coming years. “As the Revenue Service we are happy to impart tax education at a younger age because these children will grow up to be responsible taxpayers. In essence, these are building blocks of compliance imparted to the students,” said Mr Khumo Mugibelo, BURS Communications Manager.
He further indicated that BURS is committed and ready to host more schools in an endeavor to instill tax education amongst the younger generation.
One of the students, Melisah Rannakane had this to say; “I learned about BURS, which is a tax administration responsible for collecting revenue on behalf of the Government. I also heard that funds collected by this state-owned enterprise is used for infrastructural development, service and health care provision.”
Tax education is important as it creates awareness of tax, tax rates and penalties involved. “I can encourage others by raising awareness about the benefit of paying taxes,” she said.
