Did You Know
Ontario's OHIP program has significantly reduced out-of-country emergency coverage. Ontarians travelling or snowbirding abroad must now rely on private travel insurance more than ever.
As of early 2026, OHIP no longer reimburses out-of-country emergency hospital or physician costs at meaningful rates. Where travellers once received a small daily hospital allowance, those amounts have been effectively eliminated for most categories.
This affects snowbirds, frequent travellers, and anyone spending time in the United States or internationally. Without a comprehensive travel insurance plan in place, a single emergency hospitalization in the US could cost $10,000–$50,000+ out of pocket.
Key gaps travellers need to fill: emergency medical evacuation, physician fees, prescription drugs abroad, and trip interruption coverage.
When shopping for travel insurance, look for: no benefit caps on emergency medical, coverage for pre-existing conditions (with proper stability clauses), and 24/7 emergency assistance lines.
