"Is that ‘new’ $2,000 government payment real? Here’s what the CRA is warning Canadians about fake benefits"
Wondering if you might be eligible for that seemingly “new” $2,000 government payment in Canada circulating online? Well, (spoiler) no one is — because it doesn’t exist.
There have been articles circulating online about fake one-time government payments supposedly coming for Canadians through direct deposit from the federal government.
Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) spokesperson Déborah Cléry says the agency has seen a rise in misinformation and disinformation in recent years, particularly false claims about benefits.
Just last week, a new fake article popped up claiming the CRA was planning to “deliver a major financial support payment of $2,000 to eligible Canadians” in December. The payment mentioned is completely made up.
That fabricated article followed another written earlier about a similar fake $2,000 government relief payment supposedly coming for Canadians in November.
