I get a lot of people that ask me for individual stock tips. Although I may know some good stocks that are incorporated in my mutual funds, I'm not doing the charting and graphs to comfortably make recommendations. Here is why I choose to invest in the mutual fund world.
You or your "local" broker / vs. / Portfolio manager
- To keep fees down you decide to do your own trading. You can usually find a cheap trading account that will charge anywhere from $5-$10. Lets use the very low end of $5 (most brokerages will only give you a low rate if you trade a bunch. ie. TD charges $7 a trade if you trade 150 times per quarter or $10 if not). You have $100,000 to invest. at $5 a trade, if you did an average of 1 trade a day for the entire year, your "fees" would be $1,825 ($3,650 at $10). A portfolio manager in an aggressive fund would charge you about $2,000 no matter what.
- Time and resources is the next big factor. Who do you think knows the stock market more? You as a plumber, teacher, doctor, cashier, nature enthusiast etc., Your local TD Broker, or the guy that is managing 3 billion dollars out of Boston with sub offices around the world honing their craft with insight into companies you've never heard of?
- Building off of that last point, I've had people come to me and go "oh but this one stock I was in doubled over the last year, so that made me a bunch of money" It's like when your friend goes to the casino and comes back saying "yeah! I made $500 from the slot machine last night" They don't tell you about the $1,000 they dropped to finally win that $500.
I've attached the performance of my personal favourite fund. I challenge anyone that is managing their own stocks to compare it to their own account.
I will say one thing for stock trading, it is fun to look for stocks you think are going to do well and invest in them. When those stocks do well, it is a great feeling. This long winded post is simply to give an opinion on the reasons why I decide to do mutual funds over stocks.
