The “magic number” most people chase for retirement is usually wrong.

We’re taught to ask, “How much do I need to retire?” when the better question is, “How much income will I need each month, and where will it come from?” Real planning starts with expected spending, then adjusts for inflation, layers in CPP and OAS, analyzes investment returns, and stress tests for market downturns.

For some families, 1 million will not be enough, and for others, 800,000 is more than they’ll ever need. Retirement planning isn’t about guessing a big lump-sum number; it’s about designing a reliable income that can last 25–35 years.

If you’re focused only on the size of your nest egg and not the strength of your income plan, it may be time to rethink your approach.

How you pay yourself as an incorporated professional is more than a tax decision. It’s a reflection of your long‑term vision.

Salary and dividends each offer unique advantages. The right balance can influence everything from your retirement contributions to personal cash flow, reinvestment capacity, and overall tax efficiency.

What feels optimal today may change as your income grows, your business expands, or your priorities shift. The real question isn’t which structure costs less, but which one moves you closer to your long‑term goals.

At Hunt & Associates, we take a holistic approach. Ensuring your compensation strategy aligns seamlessly with your evolving life, business, and ambitions.

When was the last time you took a step back and looked at your full financial picture?

A wealth assessment isn’t only about numbers, it’s about understanding:
• Where you are today
• What’s working (and what’s not)
• Where you want to go next

Small adjustments, made at the right time, can have a big impact over time.

Because building wealth is about making what you have work smarter. Book your free consultation today.

One common mistake in charitable giving can quietly cost you thousands.

It happens when appreciated investments are sold first, and then the cash is donated.

It seems simple, but in many cases, it’s also the most expensive way to give.

Here’s why:

When you sell an investment that has grown in value, you may trigger capital gains tax.
But if you donate the investment directly, you can:
✔️ Avoid paying tax on the gain
✔️ Still receive the full charitable tax receipt
✔️ Potentially increase the overall impact of your gift

We recently worked with a client who planned to donate $50,000. By donating publicly traded securities instead of cash, they avoided a significant tax bill, while still fully supporting the charity they care about.

Same donation. Very different outcome.

The takeaway?
If you’re already planning to give, how you give matters.

A thoughtful strategy can make a meaningful difference, for both the cause you support and your overall financial picture.

Not all investments in Canada are taxed the same, and that can have a big impact on how much you actually keep.

Registered accounts like TFSAs, RRSPs, FHSAs, and RESPs offer tax advantages that non-registered accounts simply do not. In a non-registered account, interest, dividends, and capital gains may be taxed every year, while in registered accounts, growth is either tax-deferred or tax-free.

Being a successful investor is being intentional with where you hold each type of investment. That’s called asset location - putting the right investments in the right accounts so your money can work harder for you, not the taxman.

If you’re not sure whether you’re using your accounts in the most tax-efficient way, this is your sign to connect with our team to review your strategy.
