Today is "Flag Day" Feb 15th, 2026 in Canada, officially known as the National Flag of Canada Day , sixty first year anniversary of the flag being raised at noon on Parliament Hill in 1965. Many years ago when he was still with us Chief Barry King shared with me memories of that day when he was a young man on Parliament Hill. Driving in to town yesterday I noticed that the 35 X 70, 160 foot tall landmark flag, which is a monument recognizing John Ross Matheson and Brockville's significance in our country's flag birth located at the Smart Center , near Walmart in City of Brockville was at half mast and I wondered why, as one often does when we see it flying that way. Sadly our flag is at half mast as a reminder of the tragic deaths that occurred in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia on Feb 10th,2026. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the half masting after learning of this terrible loss. The flag will remain at half mast until sunset on February 17,2026 . Last year the Canadian Flag Education Centre held celebrations at Halls Apple Market to celebrate 60 years of our Flag , ten yrs earlier 50 year celebrations were held, part of that history is noted on this page Fly More Flag's - 50 Years of Our Flag
Please listen in to last years celebrations on the link below. There was some good reflections that day
