4 RESP Myths
1) if your child doesn't continue his/her education, you lose your investment
FALSE - as the contributor to the plan, you will receive all your contributions back once you collapse the plan. Any grant will be paid back to the government and any investment income will be taxed in the hands of your child.
2) RESP's only cover University tutition:
FALSE - not only do they cover tuition but they cover other costs including supplies, transportation, and rent.
3) your child is older so its too late to open an RESP:
Not at all. Ideally to receive government grants, you would want to start earlier in your child's life, however you can still catch up. So don't worry.
4) if you're not the child's parent, you can't invest in an RESP:
FALSE - with an individual RESP a parent, grandparent, God parent, uncle, aunt or close friend can contribute. Just be aware of the cumulative contribution ceiling of $50K.

Do you have an RESP for your children? If you have questions or want to get started message me.

One of the big questions I have been getting from clients since getting my RIA designation is what is Responsible Investing and why should I explore it.
This link will take you directly to the Responsible Investment Association of Canada https://www.riacanada.ca/responsible-investment/
This is easy to read information on a fast growing trend in investments and why 82% of people asked over the past year, believe is the direction they want to take their investments in.

Responsible investment (RI) refers to the incorporation of environmental, social and governance factors (ESG) into the selection and management of investments.
