Did you know your business may be eligible for GST/HST rebates?
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offers a wide range of GST/HST rebate programs that can help recover taxes paid on certain goods and services.
Here are a few common scenarios where rebates may apply:
• Amounts paid in error
• Exported commercial goods or artistic works
• Certain investment plans
• Travel expenses for qualifying organizations
• First-time home buyers (specific conditions apply)
After you apply:
Your rebate claim will be assessed, and a Notice of Assessment will be issued—usually through your My Business Account. Make sure email notifications are enabled so you don’t miss important updates.
Important reminder:
The CRA may hold your rebate if there are outstanding filings under acts like the Excise Tax Act or Income Tax Act. Staying compliant ensures faster processing.
Need to correct a past claim?
You may be eligible to update it through the Voluntary Disclosures Program and potentially avoid penalties.
Navigating GST/HST rebates can be complex—but you don’t have to do it alone.
Our team is here to help you identify opportunities, file correctly, and maximize your returns.

Important Update for Canadian Business Owner - Is your business growing? It might be time to talk about the GST/HST.
The CRA has recently updated its registration processes, and there’s a major deadline approaching that every entrepreneur needs to know. Here’s the breakdown:
Starting November 3, 2025, the CRA will no longer accept Business Number (BN) or program account registrations over the phone. Everything is moving to the Business Registration Online (BRO) portal.
Tip: If you have a SIN starting with 9, you can now use the BRO service to get your business number and GST/HST account instantly!
Do You Need to Register?
You are generally required to register for a GST/HST account if you make taxable sales in Canada and are not a “small supplier” with the $30,000 Rule:
You stop being a small supplier if your total taxable revenues exceed $30,000 in:
• A single calendar quarter (Register immediately!)
• Four consecutive calendar quarters (Register by the end of the month following the quarter you crossed the limit.)
Why Voluntary Registration?
Even if you earn less than $30,000, you can choose to register voluntarily. This allows you to claim Input Tax Credits (ITCs) to recover the GST/HST you pay on your business expenses.
Don't Get Caught by Effective Dates
Timing is everything. If you cross the threshold, your effective registration date is often the day of the sale that pushed you over $30,000. Missing this window can lead to penalties and back-taxes.
Feeling overwhelmed by the math?
Don't wait until the CRA sends a letter. Let us help you review your quarterly earnings and handle the online registration for you.

Understanding the GST/HST - Is your business still a "Small Supplier"?
If you’ve been watching your revenue grow, you might be closer to the GST/HST finish line than you think. The CRA is clear: once you cross that $30,000 threshold, the rules change—and fast.
The Quick Breakdown:
• Under $30k: You’re likely a "small supplier." Registration is optional.
• Over $30k in ONE quarter: You stop being a small supplier immediately. You must charge GST/HST on the very sale that put you over the limit.
• Over $30k over FOUR quarters: You have until the end of the month following that fourth quarter to register.
Important Update: Starting November 3, 2025, the CRA is ending business registration by phone. Everything is moving to the Business Registration Online (BRO) system.
Don't wait for an audit to find out you should have been charging tax. Let’s look at your last four quarters together and make sure you're compliant.

Are your workers Employees or Self-Employed? The CRA’s definitions might surprise you.
Misclassifying a worker can lead to serious payroll and tax complications. Even if you both agree to a "self-employed" setup, the CRA looks at the actual facts of the working relationship, not just your intentions.
Here is how the CRA defines the difference:
The Employee (Contract OF Service)
• Works under your strict direction and control.
• Does not have the chance to make a profit or suffer a financial loss.
• Is an integral part of your business operations.
• Often receives benefits, paid vacation, or falls under a collective agreement.

The Self-Employed Worker (Contract FOR Services)
Operates their own independent business.
Is completely free to choose how the contracted work is carried out.
Is not under the direct control or supervision of the payer.

If you are unsure where your workers land, you don't have to guess. You can request a CPP/EI ruling from the CRA to get an official determination.

Employee or Contractor? The contract isn't the only thing that matters.
As a business owner, how you classify your workers (Employee vs. Self-Employed) has a massive impact on your tax obligations and their benefits. But did you know that simply agreeing on a status isn't enough for the CRA?
According to CRA guidelines, the actual working relationship determines the status—not just the intention or the title in the contract.
If the facts of the day-to-day work don't match the "Self-Employed" label, you could be on the hook for unremitted CPP and EI.
We can help you:
• Review your current worker arrangements.
• Determine if a CPP/EI ruling is necessary.
• Ensure your payroll is compliant before tax season hits.

Understanding the Claiming Capital Cost Allowance (CCA): What Business Owners Should Know
When you purchase depreciable property for your business—such as buildings, furniture, or equipment—you can’t deduct the full cost all at once.
Instead, the CRA allows you to spread the deduction over several years through Capital Cost Allowance (CCA). This reflects how assets wear out or become obsolete over time and helps match expenses with the income they generate.
• CCA is claimed annually
• The full cost cannot be deducted in the year of purchase
• Different assets fall into different CCA classes with specific rates
Important note:
If you or your business has been impacted by a disaster, the CRA offers additional guidance and support that may affect how CCA is applied.
Not sure which assets qualify or how much to claim? Proper CCA planning can make a big difference to your tax outcome. Reach out to your accountant for tailored advice.
