Owe the CRA on payroll, GST/HST, or corporate tax? You can now deal with it online.

The CRA has added its Manage Balance service to My Business Account, so business owners, directors, and officers can take care of outstanding balances without calling a collections officer.

In My Business Account, you can:

👉 Make a payment
👉 Set up a payment arrangement based on your business’s situation
👉 Ask the CRA to call you back if you need more help

Just keep in mind that your accountant or bookkeeper can’t do this one for you. It isn’t available through Represent a Client, so you’ll need to sign in to My Business Account yourself.

Happy Small Business Week, Calgary! 🎉

If you own a small business, you probably know this better than anyone: very few businesses start with perfect timing or a big budget. Most start at a kitchen table, out of a garage, or with a laptop and a lot of late nights.

So this week is for you. For starting before you felt ready, figuring things out as you went, and showing up even on the weeks that didn’t go to plan.

We know a bit about that ourselves. RMI started in 2011, and this year we’re celebrating 15 years of working alongside Calgary business owners. Seeing how far so many of you have come is still one of our favorite parts of the job.

Some of these are quick to check, and some take a bit more time. Either way, it’s much easier to sort them out now than in a January scramble.
And the earlier your accountant knows about big purchases or changes in how you pay yourself, the more options you usually have.

Some things you can ghost. These aren’t on the list:

👻 CRA letters - Ignoring them won’t make the issue go away.
👻 Tax instalment reminders - Missed instalments can mean interest charges, even if you pay the full balance on time.
👻 GST returns - Interest on overdue GST is currently 7%, compounded daily. Scary enough?
👻 Filing deadlines - Your corporate tax return is due six months after your year-end, but any balance owing is usually due sooner. Do you know both dates?
👻 Your accountant’s emails - We see you 😉
