Fifty seats at Grizzli Winery, and a format that means you actually meet the room.
Small Business Speed Networking is timed conversations, one after another. You sit down with one person, you talk, time runs out, everyone moves. Three hours, and you leave having met most of the room instead of the three people nearest the door.
Friday 11 September, 5 to 8pm, Grizzli Winery in West Kelowna. Free to attend, and registration closes when the fifty seats are gone.
Hosted by IKON Financial Group. Venue by Grizzli Winery .

Nobody grabs their tax file on the way out the door.

And that’s fine — a missed CRA deadline is one of the more fixable things on the list right now. Relief from penalties and interest exists precisely for circumstances like an evacuation. It just isn’t the phone call most people assume it is: it’s a written request, it takes months, and what decides it is documentation.

Which means the useful thing you can do this week costs nothing. Save the evacuation order notice. Screenshot your ESS registration. Note the dates you were out of your home. That’s the evidence, and it’s much harder to reconstruct in March.

Swipe through for the full picture, including the three calls that are worth making today.

You billed $220,000. You kept $72,730.
Not because you spend badly — because three things take a cut before you do, and only one of them shows up on a bank statement.
The one BC trades miss: the PST on your materials. On real property work you’re the end user — you pay the 7% at the supplier and you don’t charge it on the job. Unlike GST, there’s no input credit. It’s a cost, not a flow-through, and it never appears as a line on anything you file.
Handled properly, the gap between billed and kept isn’t fixed.
Illustrative example — BC 2026 rates, sole proprietor, basic credits only.

🎞️ if you know, you know
Every number leads somewhere.
Through the receipts. Through the remittances. Through the quarters nobody wants to look at.
Every one of them goes somewhere — and where they end up is the difference between guessing and knowing.
Confidence in decisions. That’s the whole job.

$287,000 in commissions. $129,607 in your pocket. Here’s exactly where the rest goes.
First, the cost of doing business — brokerage splits, vehicle, marketing, dues, insurance. That leaves your net business income.
Then tax on what’s left: federal + Alberta, plus both halves of CPP, because nobody withholds on a commission cheque.
And GST? That was never yours. You charge it on top, hold it, remit it. Spend it and April hurts twice.
Most realtors treat that gap as fixed. It isn’t — structure, deductions claimed properly, GST handled, instalments planned.
Illustrative example, Alberta 2026. Your numbers depend on your income, province and structure — that’s the conversation.

Salary or dividends? Every incorporated owner asks it — and usually for the wrong reason. Swipe through. 👉

The tax difference between the two is small by design (Canada’s system aims for “integration”). What actually matters: RRSP room, CPP, admin, and cash flow.

All dividends? You skip CPP but build zero RRSP room — permanently. All salary? You cover both halves of CPP, up to $9,293 this year. For most owners the right answer is a blend, and where that line sits is personal.

If you’re incorporated and haven’t reviewed how you pay yourself lately, that’s a conversation worth having. 🔗 Link in bio.

Four numbers every Canadian business owner should know cold. 🇨🇦

$30,000 — cross it in revenue over four rolling quarters and GST registration stops being optional.
$9,293 — the most an incorporated owner pays into CPP this year, both halves.
Mar 15 · Jun 15 · Sep 15 · Dec 15 — CRA’s instalment dates if you owe $3,000+ two years running.
June 15 — the self-employed filing deadline (but your balance is still due April 30).

Save this for tax season. And if any of these numbers surprised you, that’s what we’re for. 🔗 Link in bio.

Yesterday I received this email claiming to be from the CRA.

At first glance, it looks legitimate. But there was one major red flag:
the sender’s email address was from an unusual domain.

The CRA does not send important notices from random third-party email addresses. This is a common phishing tactic used during tax season.

Here are a few quick tips:

• Always check the sender’s email address carefully
• CRA emails usually come from -arc.gc.ca or .ca
• Never click links in suspicious emails
• When in doubt, log in directly through CRA My Account or My Business Account

Tax season is when these scams are most active. A quick double-check can save you a lot of trouble.
