The "niche down" advice is killing HR impact.

One industry. One problem. Simple, searchable, scalable. It sounds great on paper, but I’ve never been able to make it fit the reality of what I see.

Two businesses can have the same headcount and the same industry, but completely different souls.

A retention issue at a 40-person logistics company isn't the same as a retention issue at a 40-person agency. Their histories are different. Their leadership "debt" is different. Applying a formula to both is a recipe for landing flat.

HR isn't a plug-and-play product. It’s a practice.

My "niche" isn't a sector. It’s a stage - the Messy Middle. (ha ha - spot the theatre kid!)

It's that point where you've outgrown the "we'll just figure it out" phase, but you aren't ready for a full-time HR Director. You need someone to look at the whole system, not just the fire that’s currently burning in the corner of the office.

This is me. This is what I do.

As someone who has spent the better part of 20 years reading other people’s CVs, I feel like I should probably explain myself.

I’ve never loved the traditional resume as a way of understanding who someone actually is (ironic, given the profession 🌿). So when I was thinking about how to introduce what I do and why I do it, a wall of polished LinkedIn style text felt a bit… off.

I’m Michelle. Strategic HR Advisor. Founder of ElleTree HR Consulting. British import living in Alberta. Firm believer that kindness is a strategy and that most people problems are actually structure problems wearing a disguise.

What I do as explained to a six-year old:

You know how a tree has roots under the ground that help it grow big and strong? Even when you can’t see the roots, they’re doing really important work.

Well, when someone starts a business, they hire people to come and work there. And sometimes, as more and more people join, things can get a little… wobbly. Like when everyone’s talking at once and nobody knows whose turn it is.

That’s where I come in.

I help the boss figure out how to look after all the people in their business properly. So everyone knows what their job is, everyone feels respected, and the whole team can keep growing together without it turning into a bit of a mess.

I check if the roots of the business are strong enough to hold all those people as it gets bigger. And if the roots need some help, I know exactly what to do.

It’s a bit like being a really good tree doctor. But for businesses. And people. 🌳
