Governance is more than a set of procedures; it is a living reflection of community values. This is Insight, the final thread in the HOFI framework: Hindsight, Oversight, Foresight, and Insight. It is the deeper understanding that ties values, people, and systems together.

In Indigenous contexts, governance is relational and grounded in responsibility to the community. Insight is what differentiates procedural compliance from meaningful leadership. It shows up when our Indigenous values like respect, reciprocity, and listening are built into the structure of a board or council. When lived experiences are turned into better decision-making, governance becomes more than compliance: it transforms leadership!

We can help you bring your community’s values into the boardroom in a meaningful, professional way without leaving your culture behind.

True leadership looks far beyond the current calendar. Pivoting into an aviation mindset, it keeps an eye on the horizon and thinks about the generations not here to ensure the Nation is ready for whatever comes next. This is the essence of Foresight, the third element of the HOFI governance lens: Hindsight, Oversight, Foresight, and Insight.

Governance exists for continuity, not just reacting to the crisis of the day. Foresight is where leadership moves beyond meetings to anticipate change, such as electoral/political transitions, funding shifts, or community needs. By building systems that can withstand these shifts, leadership protects the path for the next seven generations. Preparing decision-makers to act before issues become crises is how governance ensures a steady future – Proactive vs Reactive.

Do not wait for a crisis to react. Connect with our team today to help your community chart a strategic path that protects your future.

Leadership is often less about control and more about stewardship. In the professional world, this is called Oversight, but in an Indigenous context, it is really about looking after the heartbeat of the community.

Oversight is the second thread in the HOFI governance lens: Hindsight, Oversight, Foresight, and Insight. This framework provides a practical way to talk about governance without the jargon. Healthy oversight sits in the middle: it is not about being too passive or too operational, but about setting direction and protecting long-term interests. When roles are clear and decision-making is transparent, oversight becomes a shared responsibility that everyone can trust.

Reach out for guidance on creating clear mandates and strengthening the stewardship within your leadership team.

Every path a Nation travels leaves behind a story of lessons and growth. Urban Cree Consulting recently sat down with Saulteau First Nation and Jacknife Consulting to look at those stories through the lens of Hindsight.

Hindsight is the first part of the HOFI governance framework: Hindsight, Oversight, Foresight, and Insight—a storytelling framework shared by Ozone Advisory and Darren Rawson. Building on that, we discussed that rather than looking back to find blame, the retreat focused on gathering "institutional memory". By reflecting on where roles were once unclear or where informal practices created risk, the community can move forward smarter.

Continuous review and adjustments to your processes create a clear trail for future growth.

Today is Red Dress Day. What does the is mean?

Today we pause to remember the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two‑Spirit people whose lives matter deeply and whose absence is still felt every day.

The red dress is a reminder that this is ongoing. Families are still waiting. Communities are still carrying grief. Too many lives were lost, and too many voices were ignored.

We remember those who are missing.

We honour those who were taken.

And we try to move forward in a way that shows respect, care, and responsibility for one another.

What an incredible week in Saskatoon! 📍

We were thrilled to have a member of the Urban Cree Consulting team attend the 2 Spirits in Motion Society (2SIMS) annual pow-wow. In our role supporting the financial health and journey of 2SIMS, we get to see the amazing work they do behind the scenes, but being there in person to celebrate their community was truly special.

The highlight of the event was a blanket ceremony bestowed upon our team member and our firm. This honour is a powerful testament to the level of relationship and the work we deliver to our clients. It serves as a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do: to provide professional excellence that honours our traditions and strengthens the organizations we serve.

Accounting is the "how," but relationships are the "why."

It was a true honour to join the University of Calgary for their "Indigenous Career Connections" event recently.

Speaking with the students, I was reminded that our greatest asset is our collective future. At Urban Cree Consulting, we often talk about "capacity building," but seeing it in action and watching shy students step outside their comfort zones to explore networking is where the real impact happens.

A huge thank you to the U of C for creating such a safe, welcoming, and open space. My goal was to share that there isn’t just one "right" way to find success; our unique stories and lived experiences along that journey are our greatest strengths.

To the students we met: the future is bright, and your voices are needed in every boardroom and community centre across Turtle Island.
