CRA NOTICE

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) sent emails titled “Change from paper to online mail” that informed individuals about an upcoming change to their correspondence preference in My Account. This change from paper to Electronic mail has been automatically applied to your account.

This means individuals will receive an email notification when new mail is available to view in My Account. Individuals will no longer receive most CRA mail by paper.

The CRA made this change to ensure individuals do not miss important mail due to unforeseen circumstances, such as a natural disaster or a postal disruption.

If you wish to make a change back to paper mail, you can view and edit your Notification Preferences on the Profile page in My Account or call CRA to make the request if you don’t have a My Account.

This is another example of the push towards everything digital. When you choose electronic delivery, you are also preventing the need for door-to-door mail services.

Before I take the long weekend off for birthday celebrations and Easter, I thought I would share this with you reguarding the Ontario Trillium Benefit.

When the amount of the OTB payable for the benefit year is no more than a certain threshold, the benefit is paid as a single lump-sum payment at the beginning of the benefit year (instead of as a series of monthly payments throughout the benefit year). Since the 2013–14 benefit year, the threshold value has been $360 (or $30 a month)

The government is proposing to increase this threshold from $360 to $500, starting with the 2026–27 benefit year (July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027), which would result in more OTB recipients receiving their full benefit upfront. This change would not impact the total benefit amount received.

As a result of this proposed change, starting July 2026:

Individuals who are to receive OTB of $500 or less for the benefit year (or $41.66 or less a month) would receive one lump‑sum payment in the first month of the benefit year; and
Individuals who are to receive OTB of more than $500 for the benefit year would continue to receive monthly payments starting the first month of the benefit year (unless they chose on their personal income tax return to receive a single lump-sum payment at the end of the benefit year).

You might know that the goverment intruduced a new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. But did you know that they took away the GST credit in order to create this new benefit?

For a single person without children, the estimated 2024 income threshold is $56,181. Eligible single individuals can receive up to $950 in 2026 (including a one-time top-up) and roughly $700 annually thereafter.
This amount will be more if you had an eligible spouse and/or dependent(s).
