Headline: Selling on Etsy, Amazon, Ebay, Airbnb, Amazon, Etc? The CRA is watching (officially) 🕵️♂️
If you use digital platforms to earn income, the rules just changed. CRA has implemented new Reporting Rules for Digital Platform Operators.
Effective Date:
The rules came into force on January 1, 2024.
First reports from platforms due to the CRA by January 31, 2025.
What this means for you:
Online marketplaces (like eBay, Airbnb, and Poshmark) are now required to collect your tax info and report your earnings directly to the CRA.
The Details:
Who is reported?
Almost everyone.
However, "casual" sellers with fewer than 30 transactions AND less than $2,800 in total sales may be excluded.
What is shared?
Your name, address, SIN/Business Number, and total quarterly income.
When?
Platforms must file this data by January 31st each year.
Pro-Tip:
If a platform asks for your Social Insurance Number, they aren't being spammy—they are legally required to ask. Failure to provide it can result in a $500 penalty from the CRA.
