Remembrance Day asks us to slow down and think about people—not just a date on the calendar. Neighbours, grandparents, friends, and all who served (and still serve). The freedoms we move through every day didn’t arrive by accident.

At 11:00 a.m., we’ll pause our work, wear our poppies, and hold the silence. We’ll think about the courage it took to go, the families who waited, and the injuries—seen and unseen—that many carried home. We’ll also try to carry something forward from that reflection: choosing peace when it’s hard, showing respect even when we disagree, and looking out for one another in small, practical ways.

If there’s someone you’re remembering today—a name, a photo, a story—feel free to share so more of us can remember with you.

Tomorrow is STEM/STEAM Day (Nov 8). We make space for it because this is where future architects, engineers, and builders often fall in love with the craft.

Maybe it was a physics demo that finally clicked, a simple code project, or an art assignment that trained your eye for form and light. Those sparks add up—and one day they become bridges, schools, and neighborhoods that last.

To the teachers, mentors, and curious students who keep that spark alive: thank you. Keep tinkering, sketching, testing, and asking “what if?”.

🧟‍♂️ Don't let your estate be haunted by double taxation—A true tax horror story from the Grave. 🪦

Consider this:

Owner dies owning a corporation with $1M cash and an ACB (adjusted cost base) of $0. The FMV (fair market value) is $1M.

At death: deemed sale → capital gain → taxed ~$250,000 (illustrative).

Later: heirs take funds as dividends → taxed again (in some provinces up to ~47%).
Same dollars, taxed twice. Oof.

Two common fixes:

1) Pipeline: The estate transfers shares to a new corporation in exchange for a promissory note (for $1M). Pay ~the capital gains tax once and let heirs receive ~$1,000,000 tax-free via note repayment.
Outcome → Deceased's estate pays capital gains tax only.

2) Loss Carryback: Eliminate the capital gain with a carried-back loss, but pay dividend tax on distribution.
Outcome → Capital Gains tax eliminated with only Dividend Tax owing.

The core purpose of the pipeline plan is not to eliminate this initial capital gains tax, but to prevent a second, potentially larger, layer of tax from occurring later.

Both are valid tax strategies recognised by CRA, but they must be implemented carefully to avoid triggering anti-avoidance rules.

🎃 The (Tax) Return of the Dead👻

If you own a Canadian private corporation, death can come with a… deemed disposition.

Translation: the CRA pretends you sold your shares at fair market value the moment before you pass. Capital gains arise on your terminal return, and later—when your heirs pull cash out—dividends can get taxed again. Double. Taxation. 😱

Good news: there are legit ways to break the curse:

Pipeline Plan: Turn that future dividend into repayment of a note so only the capital gain is taxed.

Loss Carryback: Wind up the company and use the loss to offset the gain at death (but dividends may still bite).
