The RDSP (Registered Disability Savings Plan) is a tool that is often so underutilized by parents and grandparents of a child with a disability that can result in significant tax savings while providing financial security.

The rules governing RDSPs allow for a tax-free rollover of the proceeds of a deceased’s RRSP to an RDSP of the deceased’s child or grandchild who has an impairment in physical or mental functions, and who was financially dependent on the deceased when they passed.

The same rules apply to the proceeds of a RRIF or a pooled registered pension plan, or certain lump sums paid from an RPP.

If you would like to learn more about RDSPs and how it can benefit your child or grandchild, feel free to reach out!

For those who borrow to invest, the ability to write off interest on that loan come tax season is heavily relied on. If you borrow funds either for the purpose of investing or for your business, from non-arm’s length parties, you should pay particularly close attention to the interest rate on the loan. If the Canada Revenue Agency deems the interest rate unreasonable, the CRA could take steps to challenge the deductibility of the interest paid.

Under the Income Tax Act, investors who borrow money for the purpose of earning investment or business income can deduct the interest they pay on that debt for tax purposes. The Supreme Court of Canada has previously laid out the four requirements that must be met in order for interest to be tax deductible:
-The amount must be paid (or payable) in the year
- It must be paid pursuant to a legal obligation to pay interest on borrowed money
- The borrowed money must be used for the purpose of earning income from a business or property
- The amount of interest paid must be reasonable

Trusted Contact Persons: Providing peace of mind as you age

With an increasingly aging population, issues around providing services, including financial advice to seniors, are becoming more important. While attention is often focused on funding retirement and wealth transfer to the next generation, susceptibility to fraud often goes unnoticed.

The Government of Canada describes fraud as being the number one crime against seniors. This is why having a trusted contact person is extremely helpful in these situations.

A Trusted Contact Person is just how it sounds – a person you trust for your financial advisor to contact if they fear you are experiencing financial abuse or exploitation or, more generally, if poor financial decisions are being made that are out of character. This contact person does not replace your attorney under a Power of Attorney, nor do they have control over, or access to, your finances. They are simply a “second set of eyes” to ensure that you are properly protected as you age.

The meme-stock fad has struck again and this time rallying behind a peculiar sector...prisons.

Retail traders drove shares of Geo Group Inc. up as much as 73%. Geo Group is a company that invests in private prisons and mental health facilities. As of the close, Geo surged a record 38%. There is irony in the fact that the freedom of actual humans is at stake with Geo Group, which conflicts with the loud populist cries frequently coming from Redditors.

Just short squeeze everything!

*Reducing volatility...not returns*

In a concentrated portfolio, market volatility can be very pronounced. However, when investors diversify their holdings and invest for the long term, they can offset this volatility without significantly reducing returns, and still participate in stock market growth.

As shown in the chart, in any one-year period, the returns of the S&P/TSX Composite Index have been as high as 86.9% and as low as -39.2%; a range of over 126%. This is extreme volatility. However, if investors extend their time horizon, this volatility decreases significantly.

For example, in any 10-year period, the returns of the S&P/TSX have been as high as 19.5% and as low as 2.8%; a range of only 16.7%. This volatility is offset even further with a more diversified portfolio as shown
