The tax deadline breakdown every business owner needs — made simple with the right support and a preparer who handles the filings!

Payroll: Pay CRA source deductions by the 15th of the month after you issue payroll. If you paid in September, pay by October 15th. Paying 2–4 days early helps avoid processing delays.

GST: Filed monthly, quarterly, or annually. Your accountant will file the return and tell you what to pay. Even annual filers should make quarterly payments to ease year-end cash flow.

Corporate Tax: Filed once a year after your year-end. Alberta companies make two payments—Federal + Provincial.

Personal Tax: You’ll pay tax on any money you take from your company (salary or dividends) plus other personal income. Your accountant will request info in March and tell you what you owe or your refund.

Avoiding Your Bookkeeping? Here’s What It’s Really Costing You!

Most business owners hate bookkeeping — it’s time-consuming, boring, and easy to push aside. But ignoring your books can quietly damage your business in ways you don’t see coming.

🔹 Poor Decisions
Without clear, up-to-date numbers, you’re making choices based on guesses. That could mean hiring at the wrong time, overspending, or missing opportunities simply because you don’t have the full financial picture.

🔹 Costly Mistakes
Late payments, missed benefits, payroll errors — these aren’t just embarrassing, they break trust with employees, contractors, and lenders…and they add unnecessary fees.

🔹 Money Slipping Away
Unpaid invoices, forgotten subscriptions, and expenses you never review all drain your profits. If you’re not keeping track, you’re losing money without even noticing.

Bottom line: Bookkeeping may not be fun, but it’s essential. If it’s something you dread or never have time for, hiring a bookkeeper can save you stress, time, and serious cash.

Announcement for incorporated truckers!

This may be applicable if you're an incorporated trucker and you work for one company and don't own your truck or pay for its expenses directly (see full list of factors below).

The Government has announced that they will be allocating $77M over four years towards ensuring tax compliance in the trucking industry. Some trucking companies have been classifying their drivers as independent contractors when they may actually be employees.

What does this mean for you?

If CRA were to determine that your corporation was providing services as an employee it would change the tax classification of your corporation. The corporation would be considered a personal service business (“PSB”). A PSB pays tax at a higher rate (41% for Alberta) and is limited in what they can deduct against their taxable income (in most cases only wages can be deducted).

Factors that support your status as an independent contractor:
· You control how and when the work is done;
· You can accept or refuse work from the trucking company;
· You are paid per trip or hour. You should issue invoices to the trucking company, and they likely issue you a T4A for services provided;
· You do not receive employee benefits;
· You can work for multiple clients/trucking companies simultaneously; and
· You bear financial risk, including managing expenses and the potential for profit or loss - for example you provide the truck used and pay for the repairs.

Next steps

We recommend that you review any written service contracts you have to verify that they cover the above items to support you being an independent contractor.

If you’re unsure if you might have a PSB it would be best to pay yourself via salary rather than dividends. If you believe you have been operating a PSB, then you can apply for potential relief of penalties and part of the interest through the voluntary disclosure program that would result from the reclassification (no guarantees that it would be accepted, but it would tell the CRA you are a PSB). Due to the high tax rate charged to PSB's if you're really concerned about this risk and feel that you would be considered an employee and not a contractor if reviewed then it may be worth considering becoming an employee instead of acting as a contractor. If you hire other truckers, as incorporated contractors, who work for you then they would likely appreciate it if you passed this info on to them as well.
