Grenville County OPP is investigating a tech service fraud that was reported on February 19th, in which an Oxford Mills resident received a telephone call from someone impersonating a Bell Canada representative, offering to upgrade their router due to recent installation of fibreoptic lines.

The victim was instructed to download software to her device, at which point the fraudster informed the victim that a virus had be found, requiring escalated actions. The victim was directed to login to their online banking where the conman manipulated the victim’s accounts. The victim was then told to go to their financial institution on multiple occasions where wire transfers of "overpayment" were made to a US financial institution. The OPP contacted the U.S. Secret Service which collaborated on disrupting the fraud. The victim's financial institution will be working on recovering portions of the funds.

L’OPP du comté de Grenville enquête sur une fraude liée à un service technique, signalée le 19 février. Une résidente d’Oxford Mills a reçu un appel d’une personne se faisant passer pour un représentant de Bell Canada, lui offrant une mise à niveau de son routeur en raison de l’installation récente de lignes de fibre optique.

La victime a été invitée à télécharger un logiciel sur son appareil. Le fraudeur lui a ensuite affirmé qu’un virus avait été détecté, nécessitant des mesures urgentes. On lui a demandé d’ouvrir sa banque en ligne, où l’escroc a manipulé ses comptes. La victime a ensuite été dirigée à plusieurs reprises vers son institution financière, où des virements bancaires correspondant à un prétendu “trop‑perçu” ont été envoyés à une institution financière américaine.

L’OPP a communiqué avec les Services secrets américains, qui ont collaboré pour interrompre la fraude. L’institution financière de la victime travaille maintenant à récupérer une partie des fonds.

So as an accountant, I receive a weekly "clipping service" update from The Association of Tax & Accounting Professionals and today one of the headlines was the entry listed below. I must say that if a person cannot take the time to call themselves a Financial Advisor, or even if they must, a Financial Influencer, then I would never take advise from them and I would not encourage my clients to use such a person either.

BCD is very blessed to have such a wonderful bunch of clients! I know I push hard sometimes to get you to do things the "right way" but I am grateful for each of you for even giving me the opportunity to push you! You could choose any other service to meet your accounting needs and yet you chose BCD and I am always mindful of that and so thankful.
