ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN AND/OR CPA STUDENT

We are looking to hire a full-time accounting technician or a full-time CPA student at our CPA firm. Our firm is growing and due to staffing constraints we have been unable to accept new clients. Hiring in rural Saskatchewan seems to be a struggle but we have one of the best teams so maybe small town life is for you!!

We appreciate our current clients and their patience while we navigate our new norm which seems to always be short staffed!

However, we would like to rectify this situation and hire the appropriate staff so that in the future, we can start accepting new clients again.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare personal and corporate tax returns, GST, etc.
- Assist in preparing financial statements
- Perform bookkeeping and data entry using accounting software
- Ensure compliance with CRA regulations and deadlines
- Completion of year-end compilation engagements
- Completion of audits and reviews

For the accounting technician position - experience and education in the field of accounting is preferred. We do provide training but base knowledge or previous experience would certainly be an asset.

For the CPA student position, you would need to have obtained the appropriate university degree to enter into the CPA School of Business. We have one staff member that successfully completed this program and just passed the CFE so she would be a great asset in helping you with the program!

As many of you know, the legacy name of our firm was Close Perkins & Hauta. Gary Close started the firm in 1971. Rod Perkins became his business partner in 1973 and Bob Hauta joined them in 1977. The 3 of them grew this business until 1993 when Mike Close joined them. Gary retired in 2011 with Amanda Bertoia taking over his partnership and Rod retired as a partner in 2015 with Kerri Blanchette taking over his partnership. In 2020 Bob Hauta retired his practice and Ashley Bower took over for him and finally Mike retired in 2021.

We honor the life and legacy of an extraordinary business partner and an even more extraordinary human being. Working along side him was a priveledge that went far beyond titles. He brought integrity, vision, dedication and community into everything he did, setting a standard that elevated not only our business, but everyone who had to opportunity to work with him.

Beyond the work, he was a steady presence: supportive, generous with his time, and genuinely invested in the community. He will be missed more than words can express. But his legacy lives on - in our work and in our memories. We are better for having known him and forever grateful for the path he paved for us.

We are pleased to introduce you to our newest CPA Sydney Robertson! She is not technically a CPA yet but she passed her final exam which is the hardest part! Now she has some hours to complete and in 2026 she will be able to add those letters to her name!

PLEASE NOTE:

CRA audits are increasing exponentially as CRA is hiring more auditors to increase their capacity to do so. CRA can audit anything on your tax return but the most common ones we see are medical expenses, donations and employment expenses (vehicle and home office expenses).

CRA audits are chosen at random and have zero to do with the tax returns filed by our office. As such, your original bill includes the time to file your tax return but DOES NOT include fees for any CRA audits.

CHBB is willing to assist our clients with any CRA audits AT AN ADDITIONAL COST.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is switching to online mail for most business AND individuals communications and correspondence on:

- May 12, 2025, for new businesses and program accounts registered with the CRA on or after that date

- June 16, 2025, for existing businesses that have already registered for CRA’s My Business Account or authorized a representative for their account online using Represent a Client

Why is it relevant?
These changes are of particular concern to businesses and individuals, including sole proprietors, partners of a partnership and corporations, that:
1) are not registered for My Business Account/My CRA account (but have an authorized representative using Represent a Client), or
2) have not enabled notifications of CRA correspondence being received

IMPORTANT CRA notices or communications, which were traditionally sent by paper mail, will now be delivered online and could be overlooked. These communications will be considered received by the business unless proven otherwise. Businesses are obligated to review and respond to the CRA notices delivered using online mail in My Business Account, and failure to do so could result in negative consequences, such as missed payments, accrued interest and penalties, and reassessments due to disregarding time-sensitive requests.

Actions to consider
Businesses and Individuals should:
1) ensure they have access to their My Business Account/My CRA account and review their existing e-mail and mailing addresses, and notification preferences in the account
2) if they wish to continue receiving paper mail:
a) opt out of online mail by updating paper mail preferences through My Business Account/My CRA account or
b) form RC681, “Request to Activate Paper Mail for my Business,” and continue to monitor their CRA accounts in My Business Account for any correspondence while paper mail preferences are being processed
