Last tax season, many Canadians experienced delays receiving their slips online from the CRA — frustrating, I know.

This year, the CRA expects similar delays again but urges taxpayers to file on time using the slips they have on hand.

If you're worried about missing documents or how this might affect your filing, here's what you can do:

• Keep all your tax documents organized as they arrive.
• File on time using available slips; you can amend your return later if needed.
• Reach out to your accountant for guidance on handling missing slips.

At Lorrie Sipka CPA Inc., I can help you navigate these hiccups smoothly so you can focus on growing your business with confidence.

Canada's tax system is based on self-assessment and self-reporting. The Income Tax Act requires individuals with tax payable to file a tax return. Individuals also need to file a tax return annually to receive any benefits or credit payments, because the CRA determines entitlement for most benefits on net income.

Budget 2025 proposes to amend the Income Tax Act to grant the CRA the discretionary authority to file a tax return for a taxation year on behalf of an individual (other than a trust) who meets all the following criteria:

- the individual's taxable income for the taxation year is below either the federal basic personal amount or provincial equivalent (plus the age amount and/or disability amount, where applicable);

- all income of the individual for the taxation year is from sources that have already been filed with the CRA (meaning they have all your slips online already);

- at least once in the preceding three taxation years, the individual has not filed a return;

- the individual has otherwise not filed a return for the taxation year prior to, or within 90 days following, the tax filing deadline for the year.

Individuals would be able to opt out of automatic tax filing.

This measure would apply to the 2025 and subsequent taxation years (i.e., filing could begin in 2026).

This means less paperwork and simpler compliance for many people.

If you're managing a bare trust, this relief can save you time and reduce stress during tax season.

Heading towards the end of the calendar year, are you making the most of your tax-saving opportunities?

Maximize your contributions to registered accounts before December 31st including TFSA, FHSA, and RESP to grow your savings and reduce your tax burden. Don't forget to review your non-registered investments for tax-loss selling—this strategy can offset gains and lower your tax bill.

The RRSP contribution deadline to use towards your 2025 tax return, is March 2, 2026.

And most importantly, get organized now. Gather your documents early to avoid last-minute stress and ensure nothing is missed.

Need help navigating these steps? Reach out for tailored guidance that fits your unique situation. Let's make this tax season your most streamlined yet!

Is your staff Christmas party tax deductible? Here's what small business owners should know:

• Entertainment expenses can be tricky. Generally, the CRA allows a 50% deduction on meals and entertainment.
• But for annual staff Christmas parties or events, the full cost is usually deductible if it's primarily for employees.
• This means the food, drinks, venue, and even some decorations can be claimed.
• Keep good records and receipts to support your claim.

Planning your holiday party? Make sure you get the most from your tax benefits while celebrating your team's hard work.

Have questions about what you can claim? Reach out—I'm here to help simplify tax rules so you can focus on what matters most: your business and your people during this holiday season. Happy Holidays!
