BUSY DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN PROFITABLE
Right now is contractors are in in their busiest months.
Phones are ringing. Crews are out every day. Equipment’s running. Jobs are getting done!
On the surface, it looks like things are going great.
But there’s a big difference between being BUSY and being Profitable.
For seasonal businesses, it’s not just about covering today’s payroll, materials, and expenses.
The busy months have to do more than that — they need to carry the business through the slower months too.
That’s where things usually get missed.
A few questions worth asking:
Do you actually know what each job costs you to complete?
After labour and materials, what’s really left over?
Is your pricing covering your overhead, or just the job itself?
Are your busy months generating enough profit to get you through winter?
Or are you just staying afloat until things pick up again?
A full schedule can feel like success.
But profit is what tells you the truth.
And if you’re not clear on what each job needs to contribute toward overhead, slow months, and profit — it’s really hard to know if you’re even charging enough in the first place.
We’re already well into the busy season, which means there’s still time to take a step back, look at the numbers, and make adjustments before the year wraps up.
Because the goal isn’t just to stay busy.
It’s to make sure the work you’re doing right now is actually building a business that can support you year-round.
If you’re not sure where your numbers stand, let’s talk.
